T4 1700 into Bug....
Gibbo - September 12th, 2004 at 08:03 PM

Guys, Any thoughts on the T4 1700 into a 57 bug?

What kinda conversion troubles am I in for?

Could the 1700 be made any bigger in CC? If so, whats the max?

Cheers

1800 without engineers. anything else with an engineers. which upright conversion are you using?

No idea.... I have seen a T4 lump for sale and am wondering about the 'putting it in a bug' prospects.

well you use the 1800 fly wheel and it bolts straight in but requires a upright conversion for the cooling system i used the sharpbuilt kit but its a very basic kit the instructions leave a lot to be desired as they are pretty vague. but once its together it not bad.

Im mainly interested coz I heard that they make good strong engines. I think I will need a kombi tranny with it?

no i just ran a 1302 sbug box with it and it handled the 2L i had. mine would cruise at 110km all day and had plenty of torque

Nope Gibbo you don't need a kombi tranny, you can use a swing axle or IRS (which you have) box but in the flywheel (either 210 or 215mm) you need a brass bushing pressed into the centre so it can mate to the beetle box input shaft. I had this done down at Crankshaft Engineering when they balanced all my type IV bits, lightened the flywheel slightly etc etc.

1700 and 1800 type IVs have a 66mm stroke but the 2L have a 71mm stroke. You can mix and match though - I used an 1800 case with 2L crank/rods with the 94.5mm (0.5mm oversize) pistons....plus 2L heads but with the larger 1800 valves. Type IVs are generally more expensive to build than type Is but longevity and torque are things which are in their favour.

See this site (technical articles section) for lots of detail.
