I have one with dust inside it, also I would like to make a clock out of an old speedo..... it looks like a special machine opens them up.... the one I want to make into a clock, won't need the glass and chrome rim..... alternately I could take a photo of the speedo without the glass etc and scan it....
Anyone have any experience??

there must be someone who knows what tools to use to open up a speedo...

Maybe a small screwdriver & a small hammer :o

I've always done it with a small screwdriver starting from the edges of the rims. You just need to make sure you do it gently and slowly all the way around. The bit you are bending is hidden from view anyway.

Whilst we are on the subject of speedo's, has anyone got a grub screw for a trip meter speedo. I need one for my splitty trip meter speedo.

I've had the Kombi ones apart to fix the mileage shaft, so I don't think it would be any harder. The ring will just pop off with a little persuasion. I made a small puller to remove the needle.

If you can determine what size and thread, or make me a sample by shaving down a match stick and starting it into the thread, I may be able to help. Have a tin full of old brass clock gears and bits - often has those small screws. email me

I've done it several times. You just pry the chrome ring gently off the face and the glass will then fall out. There are two screws on the back holding the works in place; and the connectors at the top, plus a screw or two, hold the fuel guage and trembler in place.

I've had to do it to fix a squealing speedo - regrease the main shaft with vaseline.

If you are going to remove the needle but need to get it back in and WORK correctly later (yes - I know you said you wanted to use it as a clock, but others might read this), then you first gently lever the needle over the stop pin and carefully note where it comes to rest. Then you put the needle back in exactly the same position before lifting it gently back over the stop pin.

Some people take ALL the bulbs out of the rear of the speedo then take the speedo out of the dash and leave all the bulb holes open.... or sometimes they can't get a bulb to work etc and just leave it out....
