Mechanical Question - non VW (sorry!)
phantom - September 18th, 2004 at 09:12 PM

Can someone tell me about a 'steering rack' on a Commodore? My main car (VT) has been serviced and the paperwork states 'Steering Rack LH Side Leaking, recommend replacement'. The guy told me that a Holden one is about $700 and a non-genuine is about $350.

What does it do specifically? What does it leak, oil? Some other fluid? How serious is it?

Thanks...and sorry for the non-VW question......but we are taking it as well as the bug on a club run tomorrow, so I suppose that makes it VW related....

On a beetle there is a steering box.

A 1975 beetle had a steering rack - as in rack and pinion. This is what your VT has

Yes - it sounds as though your VT is leaking steering fluid. Depends how much i suppose. It is not good....... but.............

Do you need to keep topping it up???
Is that $350 installed???
Not bad if it is.

I haven't had to top it up yet but just been out to look at it and we have a small puddle. Erk.

Thanks, now I know what it is we're fussing over. Why couldn't the Commodore be as reliable as a VW?

keep up the fluid to it or it could meen a pump replacement as well as they dont go to well when run dry:(

Can you say exactly where the oil is coming from?

It "may" just be a leaking rubber boot or a hydraulic hose fitting that may be just weeping.

Get under there and clean it all off and then see where the leak is actually coming from.

Im the meantime, take the advice above and keep a close eye on the level of fluid in the pump tank.
