Differences between 82 Transporter T2.5 and later model Caravelle etc
voltz - September 26th, 2004 at 10:40 AM

I own an 82 T2.5 and am looking at the option of 'smartening' the bus up a bit. Mine has had seats and seatbelts fitted and engineered previously and Im wondering how 'interchangeable' body parts are between this and the later Caravelles as Id like to fit a speedo with trip meter and perhaps the later chrome bumpers, also wondering wether the 5 speed gearbox from the later water cooled buses would fit up to my engine etc

Regards
Geoff

Geoff

I have the same model - an 82

I have put a few body parts from a later T3 on and they went almost straight on.

Things like the lock mechanism for the tail gate is ever so slightly different.

Bumpers i am 99% sure would bolt on - or little modification.
I wouldnt mind a set of 91 wrap round bumpers. My bumpers are chrome.

I have put a rear Caravelle seat in with the arm rests and front seats as well from a T3

Speedos are intercahngeable except for the fact the tach is driven off the gear box.

Gear box i have not heard of any one doing this - but i cant think why not. I have heard of people bolting water cooled T3 and oxy-boxer motors to Type 1 bug boxes and Type 4 fit Type 1 so...... :duh

My VW manual covers both models in the one book, so...

TTFN

Thanks Barry
I'll start checking the parts selling forum and see what I can find :)
as for the speedo do you happen to know if the complete cluster assembly will swap over as I believe the 'caravelle' type has a clock and maybe some other creature comforts, also is there a genuine tacho for the t2.5's ?
