Rims dilemmas *pics*
ruckus - September 27th, 2004 at 05:17 PM

Trying to figure out which options to take with our 71 standard bug. I'm partial to some chrome 914 rims, but the GF wants to keep the stock look, just a bit wider.

So the questions are: do people think the 914 rims will look better than widened stockies?

How wide can you go under stock guards? (we were thinking maybe 5.5 on the front and - if possible - 7 at the back)

And where can you get rims widened in Melbourne?

The look of the car is heading towards a germanesque sporty look but with a fair amount of chrome still and fairly low. What do people think?

hmmm, not really the look I'm after. Sorry if these aren't the ones.

oval TOFU - September 29th, 2004 at 01:35 PM

hmmm... both look really good, but I think I like the stock widened look... very euro!

Don't like those 924 rims though.. polished 928 ones are better in my opinion...
Cheers

are these the 928s?:

Hmmm still think the stockies or the 914s look more unique and definite. both the 924s and the 928s seem a little too much like other early 80s tourer mags

BiX - September 29th, 2004 at 02:22 PM

I am getting some 15 by 7inch rears made at the moment, stock grey, stock centres. Iam after that look of powerfull yet suttle. a gaunlent in a velvet glove?

Fossil - September 29th, 2004 at 02:27 PM

Think on the ease of cleaning side and appearance. Both look good but widened stockies easier to clean and not as soft as the mag.
Will the financial controller open the purse strings for the more expensive 914 mags if so go for it.

paulgrey - September 29th, 2004 at 04:45 PM

If I had to choose between those options I would go with the 914 wheels... regards the size of the wheels you can put on the front a narrowed beam maybe the way to go.

German look? You have to go with Porshce Cups

1303Steve - September 29th, 2004 at 05:18 PM

Hi

I reckon Cookie cutters look great and would give you bit of a German look.

Steve

Sorry I'm not very articulate with my vw terms. Germanesque was meant to imply a balanced retro sporty kind of look, not a complete ode-to-porsche look. Cookie cutters would get far more expensive than the options I'm looking at at the moment I think, cups likewise. I'm not too pumped about changing the stud pattern anyway. I'd like to keep it fairly simple.

twoguns - September 30th, 2004 at 08:18 PM

i like the chrome stockie look with the moon caps for sure.... just, er, excuse the ricers on my split. :thumb. it suits teh beetle shape so well.

I love those 914's,are they the same as V.W. 4 stud pattern?
If so,are they hard to get in OZ?
I have a 412 variant but because of a unique rear drum can't do pattern change so what else is avaliable in 4 stud besides empi 8 spoke or brm 4's.
Would love porsche cup replicas but too scared to do any changes.

hehehe 914s are on their way south.... come to me my preciouses :thumb

Che Castro - November 26th, 2004 at 01:33 PM

yeah those 914's 4 stud fuchs are awesome looking wheels when all polished, dont know about price or availability but they keep your stud pattern and everything. dont really like the look of the widened stock wheels though.

Cookie cutters are pretty underated by most people, but they are a very light and strong wheel. and they look great. probably better on late models though.

this page has lots of porsche wheels on it.
