to make my car unique, im thinkin of takin the vinyl door interior out and replacing with woodgrain panels. has anyone tried this and found difficulty/disaster?

ive seen them done with plywood and they looked shocking but if done well they would look good

plywood = classy

im thinking of using serious stuff... mahogany, jarrah, maaaaybe tassie oak. have access to all of these wholesale so price is no problem. want it stained a nice deep red. this is not going to look :puke

would there be any hassles with extra weight of the wood over the vinyl. not that its hugely thick wood.

the vinyl door cards already have a vinyl backing in them for support though it is very light MDF kinda stuff and very thin. as long as u can keep the sheets of wood thin then i cant see a problem with wieght. you could follow it up with a woodgrain dash would look rather nice in an old bug

I'd be alittle worried about warping, moisture and cracks. Should look pretty cool if done right. Post pics when done.

the old cards have a plastic sheet over the back of them i forgot to mention this you would have to sort something out like that for the wooden cards. to prevent warping.

I did some in a mahogany vaneer for my old bay. They looked pretty good but were hard to attach solidly and as I had some small speakers mounted in them I never really got rid of the buz when I turned the volume up. There are probably cleverer ways to attach them though.

father dearest being the greatest woodworker i know (owns and runs cabinetmaking/speakerbox making/ storage drawer making businesses) is up for the challenge. he reckons the best way is to use a combination of the metal clips, rubber seals and some foam on the inside to stop the buzz, as well as minimise warping.

hey, i am into woodworking....i know a little on some woods...but my school woodwork project consisted of jarrah... if u could get jarrah in milled sheets of like 3mm... it would look fantastic just oiled....because jarrah has a beautiful colour....tassy oak is another good one but is white...imo, u could really do it in any timber that can be milled thin...plus one that matches your interior colour...
Trend Timbers in windsor is a great place to get ur timber...asong as ur close ofcourse....
as to mounting it to your car... u could try and buy some real nice stainless dome head allen key bolts....and some speed nuts (threaded type) and use the existing holes in the door. rather than try and hide the mounting...espose it and make it nice...

the tassie oak is easy to work with, and stains beautifully in red. but jarrah seems the way to go anyway. i like youre idea of stainless allan key bolts sounds sweet jonno, but dad owning the workshops we get wood wholsesale etc.
