reverend - October 9th, 2004 at 02:19 PM

well my generator in my 1500 is giving me the shits... short history.

1. gen light goes on get new brushes
2. brushes turn off gen light then grind down to nothing in about 15 minutes after putting them in
3. I loosen springs and replace brushes... again
4. Gen light still on and there is no sparking inside generator
5. clean communicator, did nothing
6. pulled out chunks of hair in frustration and nearly kicked next doors cat

anyone be able to help?

Also have started the car about a million times in my quest to fix the generator shouldnt the battery have run out of juice to start by now?

Go see Solly at SKH with a wad of cash like I did - works wonders.

i got an alternator for my bug after i had gone thru about 3 generators
it cost me about $370 for a brand new alternator, and it was just a matter of installing it, which was VERY easy (once i figured out which wires went where)

its easy, will take you less than a day to do and then you wont have any problems.

theres heaps of threads on the forum about alternators so check them out too.
(chances are ive got 2 perfectly working generators in my vw junk box... isnt that always the way..)

have you hooked up a multimeter to the genny?

it should read about 13 to 14.5 volts if its charging. you could just have a faulty genny light circut.

Alternator kit costs around 400-450 including the stand, shroud, and other bits.

Well worth the effort, we got a brand new (not recoed) Bosch 55 amp one and it works a treat.
In the US they can get up to 100 amp alternators.

A bit of work to install it, maybe you could just get a decent genny for about 180 recoed or 280 new, get a new, big battery and you should be fine.

am i wrong? Doesnt micks sell alternators for about 200 bucks? Apparently he has hundreds of em!

barls - October 10th, 2004 at 11:20 AM

i thought they were about 350 donkey but i got mine for 100 so im happy

Starbug - October 10th, 2004 at 08:10 PM

youre right donkey... micks does sell them, though when i bought mine they were $370-ish.

Mad Manx - October 11th, 2004 at 07:38 AM

i think i paid $260 from micks for just the alternator- bought the stand from my local vw guy for $20- the hard part was the wiring (in a manx anyhow cause the were all the same colour:cussing) Well worth it tho- Do you have a 12 volt genny in cause the round tin in the fan shroud is a different size on the 6 volt genny.
