Currently on the towbar of our '76 kombi Camper is a 6-pin connector and I need to have a 7-pin connector. Is this a hard job to do yourself? Is it possible to split the existing wiring so that you could retain the use of both connectors?

Alternatively, can you simply get an adaptor to change from 6-pins to 7-pins and if so (excuse my ignorance here), would you lose-out in any way in functionality by not rewiring if you went this way?

Yes there are adaptors available...It wouldsave time n effort re wiring the plugs.

Possible the next trailer you get will have the origional type plug.. go buy an adaptor.

6-pin? Do you mean 5? Most common trailer plugs are 7 or 5 pins - the 7 pins have two extra wires for electric brakes, but they are often used for power to accessories on caravans, etc.

If you put a 7 pin connector on your camper, you can wire it to be compatible with 7 AND 5-pin trailer connectors. :thumb

Adapters aren't really necessary until you start mixing round and flat plugs.

Definitely 6 at the moment.

You can buy the adapters from just about anywhere that sells anything car related. From Kmart to Repco to Auto One to servos to Bunnings to ....

5 pin? or 6 pin that only uses 5?
I know of 6 pin round, 7 pin round, 7 pin flat, and big round one that i've only seen on trucks. maybe its for 24V trailers.

I hate trailer plugs n lights. I have been working at a hire mob and they always give me grief. As well as DIY towbar fitters/wirers.

This is a job I haven't done yet, but will get to soon. There is an Australian 'standard' trailer wiring colour scheme somewhere which is a bit weird - white for earth for example. I would prefer to stick to VW colours I think, like brown for earth and white for lights.

I imagine the rear of the tail-lights would be the best place to tap into the car's electrics.
