What is the ideal running temp for a beetle motor...?

And while we are on the topic is the best spot to put an oil temp sender?


Just wanna know b4 summer hits? Vernon runs at 90 degrees i know thats ok but on a hot day when is an engine too hot, and needs a little rest? and how cold is too cold to cause problems?

I tapped my temp sender in to the screw for the relief valve.

I have the temp sender in the same spot on my Single cab split ute, with a 1776 engine on a hot day on the freeway it will get to 100 - 110 deg C, if it gets higher I just slow a bit and it goes down to around 90 - 100 deg C. It only has the stock dog house oil cooler, no extra cooler.

It also depends where you mount the sender. I have had 1776 and 1600 stock and hotted.

When mounted in the rear pressure relief plug it would sit at 90 and go to 110 on a drive. On a 40 degree day at 110 kms on the free way it would go higher. I also use to run hood jaks.

When mounted in the case beside drain plate it would run 20 degrees cooler. ie sit at 70 and run at 90.

Made sense - the first place is on the way to the cooler, so hotter.

The main thing is relativity. If your motor is running fine, and smells fine it is ok. A dud motor will smell wrong. What you aremore looking for is a change in normality.
If it sits at 100 and on day starts sitting at 115 for the same driving and the oil light starts flickering at idle.....................:jesus:jesus

It definitely depends where sender is located.
In 1800 Kombis we usually are happy aroound 100-115C in WA summer.
We still think John Muir's system is the best. If engine sounds OK and you can hold dipstick ,even if you have to swap hands, it's OK.
