Help please.
I'm used to type 1 engines where the timing marks on the pulley indicate that #1 is a tdc and obviously the rotor button is pointing at # 1 on the
distributor cap.
I'm now trying to get a type 3 started and it's not very enthusiastic because I think the timing is a mile out. I hears somewhere that the timing
marks on a type 3 fan are different by 180 degrees. What does this mean?
Do I have to do anything different to set the ign timin on a type 3 compared to a type 1?
Thanks in advance.
Set up proceedure is the same, the exact timing depends on which dizzy you have and what year the car is. The timing marks are on the fan. Look
through the hole in the fan housing and turn the fan. Eventually you will see a little block with three lines on it. Unfortunately I cannot remember
which is which and I think it also depends on what year the car is.
When the rotor is pointing at the notch on the distributor, that means #1 is at TDC.
Thanks for your reply. The trouble is I've had the dizzy and dizzy drive out and I just put them back as per type 1 so the timing #1 mark in the
dizzy is unfortunately not reliable.
Do type 3s have different heap problems to beetles? Stock beetle dizzy's are retarded on #3. What about type 3s?
For a 1600TP you can set up as per 1600TP type 1 as you say, they are basically the same motor. As purpleT3 says timing marks are on fan/pulley and
you view through hole in fan housing. NOTE one side has a single mark for setting valves and is TDC for 2/4 pistons. Look for the 2 or 3 marks side by
side for timing. Looking at them from the rear of the car, the LH mark is 7.5deg, middle is 10deg and RH one is 12.5deg.
Stock vac/mech advance dissy for 1600TP has retard on No 3 same as type 1.
PS: Reading from my manual
I've just tuned my '69 notch and it's 7.5deg btdc.
Large mark on the left is TDC then marks for 5, 7.5 and 10 deg
and 50deg dwell.
now i just need to tune my carbs and all will be sweet.
I take mine to Leon's.....
timing is only half the job.. tuning carbs is the other half...
If they are not Tuned.... may as well not do the timing..
