hey all. i need some responses.
is there any ratio differences between any of the swing axle gear boxes that were available over the years, ie for 1200 to 1500 vw's. was there any
better than others? and do all swing alxe vw's interchange. ie beetle to notch to bus etc?
thanks

I think Rob will be able to confirm or deny this but I believe that the 1500 is the best for doing a straight axle swap on a bus as it has higher
gearing.

how do u tell the difference?
Only way I know is Keith Sueme did a book something like how to hot up your beetle or something like it and in the back it had a section on codes for
gearboxes. Sorry but I havent got the book.
57 Chookshed has a copy ask him to check for you.

thanks dave.
Probally the easiest way to tell the 1500 box is that the starter bush was a small one for the 12V starter... u can pick it that way.
and you all think there is a different in ratios between them?
there is different ratios and final drives. At least 3 different ratios that I know of prop 4 from memory.
try this page http://sandlizrd.baja.com/gears.htm
the 1500 had a 4.125 : 1 final drive
the earlier 1200 gbox's had a 4.375 :1 final drive
there was also the later model 1300 econo model beetles 68- 74? that were 12 volt and swing axle but had the 4.375 final drive ratio
