My 1970 Kombi 1600 needs a pep up. Any suggestions without a complete rebuild or motor replacement? It's all standard at the moment. Regards to all Al.:bounce

what is wrong with it? does it misfire or anything like that? does it leak excessive oil? does the oil light come on at idle when warm?

need more details before any kind of assessment can be made. When was the last time it was tuned up?

Thanks Jon. No major oil leak or loss. Just done spark plugs and points, carby cleaned. Mech suggested new carby as he said it was worn out? Choke not working and motor stalls when idling, some backfiring but muffler in poor state. Have had Kombi for about 3 months and no previous mechanical history available. Never fails to start however on the good side. Cheers Al

On several occasions I had begun to think that the motor in my previous kombi was knackered, when all it really needed was a damn good service. :)

Are you sure it's not giving all it's got? Don't forget it's only a 1600 in a big, heavy, not terribly aerodynamically efficient body;).

Mind you, a mate back in the UK put a 1300 beetle lump in his bay (all he could get hold of at short notice) and drove it, fully laden, from Scotland, south to the English Channel and then down through France and Spain to Portugal. Reckoned it was OK but you needed a calendar to time the standing 1/4 mile ;).
