2L not sounding good at all
choo - October 25th, 2004 at 03:57 PM

I have Kombi with a 2 Litre which for the most, has treated me well.
The oil light came on so as soon as I could I pulled over and put some in. In the past when this has happened after running for a minute or so the light goes off and things return to normal. Not today. I managed to get home, only about 2kms. But on the way a really bad "Squeak" developed. That's the only way to describe it. It was if there was no lubrication at all, but since I acted quickly and put in about a litre of oil I am not sure it's an oil problem. The other thing is that the most recent refill was with unleaded (reg) and since then there has been a subtle knock. I then put some additive in to compensate, but the "squeak" nor the oil light will go away. Any answers or help will be greatly appreciated and I am more than happy to clarify the problems if there are questions. Until then, Thanks, Choo

The oil light coming on does not (necessarily) mean your oil level is low, it actually means oil pressure is low which could be the result of a leak or a faulty oil pump. In that case adding oil will not help. The oil light coming on and staying on does not mean it's time to top up the oil, it generally means big trouble. Does the motor leak alot of oil?

If this has happened frequently as you describe, it's quite possible that over time major damage has been done to bearings or other engine internals and this latest episode has killed it. The other possibility is that you oil pressure switch is faulty. If you are not mechanically minded, take it to a VW mechanic as soon as possible for a check. The symptoms you are describing could see you with a blown engine.

Thanks PurpleT3. That sounds bad but accurate. I think it will be getting towed.
Generally the motor doesn't leak a lot of oil. But there has been a history of it happening. The sound that it's making definately sounds like a bearing issue. I think I'm in trouble. Thanks for your reply.

Hey choo, if you fill in where you are in your profile some people on here might suggest places to go (ie - garages).

Hope it's OK!
