Stop leaks
Listy - January 14th, 2003 at 11:15 PM

my engine has an oil leak which comes from the left pushrod. Nothing major says my mechanic, but he reckons that the only way to fix it is to take the head off and stretch the rubber seal. Anyhoo...what about the bottles of leak stoppage stuff / goo that i see in car shops? Does it work? Anyone had experience using this kind of stuff?
cheers, ian

No I don't believe that they would work on a pushrod tube seal. The seal may be cracked... which is common.... I bought some new seals from Peter Richards at Nambucca 2 years ago. He told Me that the seals being sold are mostly rubbish and All Mine have cracked, although the engine has only been test run for probably 20 minutes - 5 years ago - so they are not leaking yet.. but I will replace them shortly.
Many years ago, The Superbug I owned dropped a valve and was repaired by the NRMA garage locally, who towed Me into town. As the Mechanic who repaired the Engine, didn't know about stretching the Push Rod tubes .... most of them leaked, and I traded the beetle in on a type 3 variant soon after..... I didn't know any thing about VW engines back then.... & Yes I do know a bit Now....." it didn't happen overnight but it did happen..."
I believe it common practice to replace Push Rod tubes when doing an Engine overhaul....
PS. I suppose You could try that stop leak pressure pack can they show spraying under sinks etc.... but where it is leaking would have to be SPOTLESSLY Clean.... No Oil.... Difficult....

You can replace the pushrod tubes without removing the heads. You can buy aftermarket pushrod tubes that are spring tensioned, I haven't used them myself, maybe someone else can help with details?

Only buy the German made pushrod seals. There about $2.00 each but they dont leak after 5 minutes.

I have used a blue screw adjust type one. Works well.
I will replace it one day when i pull the motor and take the head off for some reason.

Yeah bloody expensive - i am sure they are priced agaist pain and suffering of pulling a motor.
A mate hade a spare one lying round so that is why i wacked it in mine or even $50 is better than pulling my motor (again!)
If they were all stuffed you would do it properly and cheaper by pulling the motor.

Then again a mate one bought a motor 2nd hand and it was full of these things!
