Well, the front brakes in my 71 super bug sound like metal on metal noise when ever I stop.
Still can stop, though I get a feeling something is really wrong with them.
Of course, I'm not to cluey about it all, just wondering if the brake drums need replacing, or just re-machining, and how much would it all cost
approx.
I guess the 10 months off the road was not to kind to the thing (had some issues with the clutch and starter motor which I only got around to fixing a
couple months back)
Dont drive it anymore.
If you dont know about brakes get someone who does to have a look, it might just be rust on the drums or the linings are worn, but get the checked
first.
Cheers
Dave
if in doubt, get it checked out.
brakes are a very underrated component.
If you're unsure at all, ask someone who knows.
this forum can at times be a wealth of information, and the best part, it's free advice.
brakes are one of the things that I like to get done by the professionals though.
most brake places will give you free inspections. take it to someone to get a professional opinion, and a free quote.
Yes well I understand about not using the car with dodgy brakes, which for the most part I am (currently using my motorbike)
Was wondering about a rough estimate on price to get them fixed before I'd go and see a brake place about getting a quote. If it is too expensive, I
might just consider retiring the car, and get something newer.
Firstly, Super Beetles didn't have brake drums on the front...
they had disc brakes... and if it sounds like metal to metal You will need new brake pads plas New Brake Discs...
You should have checked them before they wore thru to the metal... its something everyone should keep an eye on...
Brake shoes or brake Pads... they don't last forever....
they do need replacing.... before they wear out......
and wreck the disc or drum....

Damn, your right about the disk brake thingie, damn I'm not happy about it.
Anyhow, I've only used it for about 200 km since it's 10 month break.
Anyhow, any ideas about price for it to get replaced?
new discs about $150
pads depending on brand $80
then you'll add labour for bleeding and installation (unless you do this yourself)
It could be just that your brake pads are worn. Pretty easy to fix.
Rotors can be machined as long as they wont go under 8mm .thick
