Need help opening a 71 superbug's luggage compartment, cable pull not unlocking release, how do I get into the front of my car.
if the spare wheel is not in, i thinkyou can acess thru the hole cover, inthe base of it from underneath. i had to do it plenty of times with my 66.
front wheel still in car as well as all carpet..
hmmm bummer. have you tried someone moving the bonnet aroudn gently while the cable is pulled. sometimes, and you hope its the case, they are jsut catchinga little.
The spare wheel lays flat in a superbeetle, and stands upright in a standard beetle... slightly different....
You need to hold the outer part of the cable and then pull the inner cable..... vice grips are handy for this...
It won't open just by pulling the cable... You have to hold the outer cable and then open with the lever.... its a two way thing...
One of the locals has cut off the cable after putting it down thru a hole just under the latch, He has a knob attached and just pulls on the knob just
under the front to open the bonnet...

My 68 Beetle has a round knob under the dash to open the catch..... No broken glovebox to worry about.....
Why they changed this the next year I don't know....
An Improvement.... I don't think so,,,,

that would be better idea. i hate those donkey pricks. i try never to close my bonnet anymore.
and sorry about the tire thing. am only really used to 6v.
Otherwise you have to cut the handle and spin the 2 halves and disconnect it that way.
IF you can pull the radio and get hold of the cable there and a pair of vice grips/good pliers and REEF it.
What will have happened is the plastic out has broken and when you pull the leaver the " slack" has been taken up by the break and not moving the
latch.
Cutting the handle in half won't get the handle off as the push button stops You from spinning it around.....
You can only cut the handle of the early models without the pushbutton....
Placing the handle inside the glovebox which is made from cardboard wasn't a good idea... although they did last 20-30 years.... and cars aren't
supposed to last that long...
the pull handle under the dash was the best way to go...
