I have a vdo temperature guage in the dash that doesn't work. the sender lead is just lying loose in the engine bay. where on the engine is it supposed to go?

Depends on where the last owner/engine builder placed the sender.
Does the motor have a sender ?
Places to look: Sump plate or the bottom right hand side of the case, below the dipstick, may also have a dipstick sender.
