65 Notch questions

My 65 Notch has an irs and discs up front. I want to lower the car abit , about 1.5' maybe 2" no more as hopefully soon it will be sitting on some 16 x 7 Porsche Dials via adapters. Thats low enough for these crappy roads , just want to lose any large gaps between tyre and arches.

I know the rear is the same as a beetle and have been told the front is similar.

Is this right and has anyone done it lately that can give me some pointers

I lowered the front end of my '58 bug recently. Adjuster was welded into the lower tube, which gives you some scope to fine tune it. Also the shock towers were extended as when you turn the torsion leaves the arms get closer to the shock tower and you lose travel. Extending them gives you back the travel.

The upper torsion leaf was cut and turned to match the lower one so the spring rate would be the same as stock. Also I had the upper arms bent to increase camber. Running more camber at the front lets you get away with a lower ride height as the top of the tyre goes more into the fender.

I am having 26mm sway away torsions in the rear which were turned so i ended up having the spring plates about 0 deg. Havent got the body on it yet so i dont know what the ride height is exactly.

IRS is not standard for a 65'; it's either got a late pan, or late suspension in an early pan.

I suggest you get yourself a manual for a late ('70-on) Type 3 and read the section on suspension height adjustments. You'll soon understand how to do it yourself. They can usually be picked up for around $10-15 second-hand, try the old book shops in your area. :)

No cost and simple....

It is interesting the IRS rear......must have been a conversion. I know the drum to disc
conversion on the front is not too hard.
