Hi All,
I have been doing some thinking and I have come to the conclusion that I am going to tackle building my own engine instead of getting someone else to
build it. That way I can spend more money on parts!!!
Therefore I thought that I would throw the question out there....has anyone got a list of parts that I should look into getting for my build up? Maybe
from past /present experiences...I am very new to the VW scene but I have been passionate about cars for along time.
I don't want to have to modify the body in anyway as it is currently getting painted at the panel shop. I have removed all the sound deading stuff
and I don't intend to put it back in....
I was thinking along the lines of a 2007 donk with 44 webbers? What type of cams, case, pistons, cyclinder heads, etc...
Any thoughts would be much appreciated...
Cheers.
Matt.
A 1300 is a nice quiet motor, economical and should be fairly easy to build.
2007... is that the year you want to finish it in??? :thumb I have no Idea but good luck.
Matt
A 2007 is a reasonably easy motor to build
That said - it IS a stroker and some clearancing spacer work will be required.
As for what cam heads etc that is so tough. What do you want to do with it?
Where do you want the power??
Daily driver or week end warrior??
What is you budget?? A good set of heads would cost between $1000 for stock 040's with bigger valves to several grand for DRD 044 Magnums
Go to places like
http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles.htm
and
http://www.cal-look.com/index2.html
the Cal Look site is good cause if you go to the Top 10/20 list and click on the name it gives you the details of that motor build.
Then go back to places like Aircooled.net and CB performance and go shopping and see how much it will cost.
Personally - i would consider the 1916 route. You will get HEAPS of power and save a few $$$ to boot.
A fair bit easier to build as well
Good Luck
Thanks blue74l,
I will have to do some late night research.
I am trying to stick to a budget of around 4k...is that reasonable or am I just doing a bit of dreaming??
I am going to need it as a daily driver however I was also wanting a bit of that weekend warrior as well...
With the 1916 is panel fabrication still required?
I understand that there are two types of new cases that I can get...which one is the best? (magn' or allimin')
Cheers and thanks.
Matt.
You should be able to go the 1916 route for about 4k. No panel work is required in the engine bay.If ya got the $$$ go the alloy case and be done with it. You will get a lot more life out of the alloy case and it is not much more expensive than the magnesium case.:beer
