is the physical size (external) of a 1200 the same as a 1600 and therefore the tinware the same?

nope

1600 is bigger, and if I am correct you will have to snip out some tin around the engine bay in an early bug to get a 1600 to fit.

will the tinware for the 1600 fit in the engine bay for the 1200? or are the engine bays different in sizing?

it is the same size around the outside,
a little bit tighter putting in the engine around the heater boxes

The 1500s 1600 and I think 1300TPs are wider - the engines bays in later models are a bit longer (I think) and wider. Need to do a snip of the tinware to get a later engine into a Oval, for instance... and the sealing rubber is still a TIGHT fit... might even have tin rubbin on body. Mine does...
