What's the general feeling on auto's in vw's? Are there any concerns or traits that you should be aware of before buying one? I drove one the other day and it seemed to be fine. Should they be avoided, for some reason i have a neagtive feeling towards them.
Thanks
Choo

I have one in my kombi

i "think" the 2L ones are a bit better than the 1800's

Think mine is manual kickdown as opposed to ...... elctronic?? .....

Eitherway, the only problem with mine is it sticks in 2nd until it warms up, say 10kms... no drama but one day i will need to replace or rebuild it.

Other than that they are great.

So, IF you can test drive it, make sure it is cold and hasnt been warmed up

I had one like that years ago.... it was a partial blockage in the oil gallery in the oil pump.

Pull apart n shove a coat hanger wire up it no prbs.... just 8 to 10 hours work getting the bastard apart n back together Of course the oil pump is the LAST thing u need to remove in the gear box isnt it

As far as I know VW auto boxes are fairly bullet proof in stock applications. Most Type 3 autos boxes are still performing perfectly OK, they are one of the longest lasting and most reliable parts of the car.
