Hi,
I am really not much of a mechanic yet.... I am trying to learn... and i was wondering if someone could tell me what the following things are in my photo (the arrows are pointing to them).... The one at the top is soe kind of metal tubing.... it is not connected to antyhing in the middle (should it be)... and the fan like looking thing in the middle, all the wires are there just not connected... what is it??? and should i connect it and get some new tubing for it???

Thats the fan for your heating system.

The tubes across the top are part of your fuel tank breathing system. If you go outside and look into your rear air vents, you can see part of the 'sausage and tube' system. They stop fuel vapours going to the atmosphere. They are also plumbed into your air cleaner, so you need to make sure all the connections are in good condition and none are missing. The top pipes you've arrowed should be firmly fastened to the roof of your Kombi's engine bay.

The 'turbo' is part of of your Kombi's heating system, which is much better than a Beetle's. On your dash you have two red levers. The left of the two controls front/rear bias and windscreen/footwell balance, but the right-hand red lever is your main control. It turns on your heater when you pull it down.

Now the lever is attached to a scissor switch just behind the dash. You can pull the lever most of the way down and it just pulls on cables that open the heat exchanger flaps on the motor. You get a bit of warm air, just like a Beetle.

But if you pull the right red lever ALL the way down, it also activates an electrical switch which turns on that turbo fan. It then blows the heat through the pipes and into the cabin, far better and more efficiently than the motor alone could do.

If it works, you should actually hear the fan 'click' on when you pull the lever down. Only with the ignition on or the engine running, of course.

Thanks for the help.... should the tubes i have arrowed be connected to each other and then fastened to the engine roof, or should they just be fastened to the engine roof???

There should be a rubber T piece that joins the pipes in the middle. The pipes are fastened to the roof of the engine bay with little screw clips.

The fuel breather isnt so important but you MUST hook up the fan hoses. You will see where they connect to pipes on either side of the engine. One is round, the other oval. If you dont block off these pipes you are blowing hot air off the exhaust into the engine bay. #1 rule of Volkswagenism is keep heat out of engine bay.

u obviouslky have to have heater boxers then?
and if u go for an aftermarket stylwe water cooled motor and put in air con can u just use the original heater pipes???

Nope. You dont have to run heater boxes. You just need to block off the holes in the tin and at the bottom of the fan housing.

Newbie, the loose end of the hose goes to a point on the upper right-hand end of your charcoal cannister, if fitted. Otherwise, just leave it open. :)
