RISKY^VW - November 30th, 2004 at 07:40 PM

hi people
im doing up a 1600 tp for my baja
now when i took the heads off the was thin spacers betwin the head and the barral and wanted new one and was told they should not be there in 1600 so i asked what should?
and was told nothing should be there?
is this right?
and what about the seal at the case should the be something there or not?
any help would be great
cheers

Nothing between the head and cylinder as it is a taper fit, and I only use a gasket glue between cylinder and case the most important thing here is correct torque and tightening sequence

ok thanks people :)

Removing a gasket that was there originally will increase compression.
If you don't use the head gasket, it can be made up with a thicker base gasket to bring compression back to spec.
:duh

Yeah your right it will increase compression, but remember that its not supposed to be there in the first place, so whoever built the motor probally didn't know what they were doing, so I'm guessing it wasn't built to any spec anyway.

Also in reply to the taper fit comment, never heard of this before, where exactly is the taper?

The spacers have been fitted to reduce the compression ratio

Either the heads or the crankcase has been machined to get a flat surface and too much material has been removed.

Fit the pistons and barrels and calculate the compression ratio first without teh spacers then add the difference of the spacers and see which ratio is closest to stock.

Silver yes thats right no gasket between the head and barrel but its not a taper fit it just slips in

Lapping is the best method to seat each barrel to the cylinder head.

Hi Wisky

Theres a head gasket that was used on 1700 or 1800 Type 4 engines, its the perfect size to fit under a 1600 barrel, so if after calculating the compression ratio you find you need spacers these may be ideal.

You need a spring compressor thing.

It is a lever action that pushes the plate down and allows the lock to be taken away.

You can make a butcher version using angle iron and a vice.

Best to take it to a shop and get them to take them out for you. Only a 2 minute job - when you have the tools
