HELP!!Carby Manifold or Adaptor Plate???
marty_08 - December 7th, 2004 at 06:32 AM

I'm trying to decide whether to use an adaptor plate or to go with a new manifold for a 1600 twin port beetle engine. Any help would be great as my original carby has shat itself and i'm trying to get the buggy going for this weekend down the coast!!!!

The carby is progressive but not sure what brand. It has a square base with 4 bolting holes and the manifold is stand 'kite' shape with the 2 bolt holes.

I understand that is probably better to go with a manifold that has the diameter to maximise the carby but..

What are the pro's and con's of each??

Which is cheaper?

Where do i get a plate or manifold made up?? Exhaust place or engineer??

Does anyone know a good place around Chipping Norton/Liverpool in Sydney???

replace the carb

even if you did get the carb to fit you would then need to jet the sucker. At the mo' you dont even know the brand so you are not going to jet it properly for the weekend.

Go to a wrecker and get your self another pict for $50.

No way are you going to get a manifold / plate for that $$$ and jet it.

BTW - it will flow like a pig if you try and plate a 2 bbl to a stock manifold.

I wouldnt do it AND then go away for a weekend. You will kill your motor.

Thanks for that advise .. point taken!!!

Do you know of any wreckers in Sydney other than Brooky parts plus and beetle spares at Revesby that would have a 34 PICT carby?? Tried both of these with no luck!!!

Does anyone out there have a 34 PICT carby that is doing nothing??

Am i able to re-con / clean the current carby???? Is so, please explain?

if you have a 34pict carb thats a bit dodgy. by a rebuild kit for 25 bucks and clean the whole thing in peices with thinners and replace all the gasgets and needles etc with the kit and u might be surprised. will take u about an hour or so make sure u get all the muck out and that there are no airleaks.

I have found that apart from wear on the moving parts of the solex carburetors, the accelerator pump has a steel ball in the valve plus a rubber diaphram... the rubber diaphram will eventually wear out and crack and leak and sometimes the steel ball is gummed up with old fuel... I have 2 PICT 30s here with gummed up balls, so the accelerator pump won't work... it allows the engine to idle OK but NO acceleration....
Old fuel left in the carburetor turns into terrible looking gooey mess... I have tried all sorts of ways to clean the balls , but to NO effect... to test the accelerator pump, just push the lever that attaches to the throttle cable down, and even without the engine running [carby full of fuel] and when looking down the throat of the carburetor You will see a jet of fuel spraying downwards from a small arm....
this arm can also fall out, and ends up in the engine, as one of mine did... was still there when I pulled the engine apart..
was reusable... they just push into a hole...
My Son runs a double barrel Holley carburetor on His Beetle with matching inlet manifold- so the manifolds are about....
You may be lucky... My Sons beetle uses a lot MORE fuel than a solec PICT 34, but it also goes like hell.... Depends what You want... I suppose at the moment You will take anything..
Here is a diagram of a type 3 carby- the pink colored jet is from the accelerator pump...
Best of Luck..

Thanks for the advise guys, much appreciated!!!

Might be forced to go with a good clean and gasket replacment!!

Was told it's not worth doing by a place, but they were probably trying to get me to buy a newie for the $500 they were asking!!!!!

OUCH

A new carb is about $360.
I have a 34 here and also twinport manifolds and even a rebuild kit.

Just found out that it is apparently the solenoid that is not allowing my 1600 to not idle properly!!!

No way of fixing???

How much for a new or used solenoid??

Any help is great help guys!!!! So thanks in advance!!!

The solenoid is designed to cut the fuel off to prevent run on.

Either get another one and screw it in

or

Take it out and cut it off

This has happened to MANY Picts
