How to tell if drums are worn out?
Chewy - December 11th, 2004 at 03:13 PM

How can I tell if my drums need replacing?
There doesnt seem to be a ridge on the outside edge of the drum where the pads dont contact but there is on the inside.
Would the inside ridge just be part of the casting?
I dont have the tools to measure the I.D. of the drum.

Thanks

When you remove teh drum theres a small 45 degree champher on the out side of the brake area. If this still looks all intact then there not worn or have not been machined before.

They sound OK...
Mostly Brake drums are wrecked by Worn Out Brake Shoes..
where the steel shoe makes contact wiith the brake drum and there are grooves everywhere....

I don't think they normally wear out as the Brake pads are softer than the brake drum itself....

If they are grooved, I think You can have them machined once... depending on how deep the grooves are...

So there is no maximum wear limit like on disc rotors?
They do eventually wear due to the abrasive properties of the brake pads, no groves tho so I'll give em a go.
thanks

yes there is a maximum wear limit... if the champher is gone then yr brake drum is worn out.

to be sure just take them to a brake place they'll be able to tell you if theyre ok I just had some done for my country buggy rear end and they had to put oversize shoes in it but theyt were within the wear limit
