Hello, just about to pick up Kombi with new full recon and need to know what is the best way to keep an eye on the temp. We will be all over the place. I want to fit it myself. What do I buy and how to fit is awsome info. Ta

oil temp gauge and sender...sump type.

external oil cooler with thermo fan...

aftermarket air scoops....can't remember what there called

I did this and drive from Sydney to Perth in 5 days with no problems at all...

I think He only wants to monitor the temperature of the engine oil...
so a sump oil temp sender... and VDO Gauge....

or a dipstick sender and VDO Gauge.... more expensive....

Make sure that there is NO AIR leaking from anywhere on the engine tinware.... block up all holes...
Losing air is the same as a water leak.... IMHO..

Is your kombi a 1.8 / 2lt (type 4) engine?

If yes, some say that the VDO dipstick is not long enough to reach into the type 4 case to read accurately. I haven’t confirmed this.
Else the VDO should be good.

Also some say dipstick senders read too hot, probably because the temp varies from the top layer of oil that just dripped of the crank bearings to that of oil at the bottom of the sump that had time to cool. I think that its good to know the hottest temperature that the oil is getting to rather than an average temp.
I’m thinking about getting a Berg dipstick for my type 4 engine, but they hook up to the oil pressure light so you’re not sure if you lost oil pressure and people say that these are a bit fragile.
