Smoked Lens' - Legal or what?
The_Bronze. - December 21st, 2004 at 01:42 AM

Just that!

I did a search - seems to be a dud topic.
If replaced my brittle tail and indicator lenses with smoked replacements - would it pass?
Also hoping to use LED's for tail and brake. More difficult for indicator. Need to replace relay.

only if they met the ADRs (australian design rules) they should have an e in a circle is the most common one that symbolizes this

i think it comes under the heading

"Illeagal and Illeagal - different levels"

I would be amazed if the were legal - but i would also be amazed if some one knocked you back

By the letter of the law no replacement after market lenses are legel unless that have DOT or ADR approval. Guess that makes 90% of VW's illegal.

yeah even a fair few of the new repo lens arent legal because they dont meet the right specs to get DOT or ADR appoval. i know the ones ive had dont have the right markings on them to be legal

No Mexican- Brazillian or USA Made lenses would be legal in Australia...

Only the original type Hella tail lamps...
and Only in Red and Amber.....

Once the police etc find out there are Smoked lenses available... the Nasty ones will be onto them......
same as some of them object to opened engine lids...

If your car is a pre 72 I don't think it's really going to matter, and I don't think you can get a defect for it.

Pre 72 is pre compliance plates and pre strict ADRs. A pre 72 car doesn't even need a windscreen... that's why Country Buggies, Land rovers and stuff had fold down screens.

As long as the lights do what they should you should be fine. That is they must be red to stop, amber to indicate and have tail lights. The guys with minis will tell you all about the benefits of a pre 72 car, they love em.

Had tinted taillights that were almost black on a gemini for about 12 months, never got hassled
sold the car and guess what, saw it on the back of a tow truck, it had been rear ended :duh

35% tint on glass or lights is legal and lower isnt,,i have 5% tint on my car ,black as the ace of spades, had to take it up to 18% got pulled over and had to take tint off from lights and front windscreen and tail lights and car windows,so found at 18% they leave me alone....colleen

Thanx for all your opinion guys.

I think I will get them but will stow away some regular lenses in the back so if I do get hassled I can change them there and then without coping a fine (hopefully).

The front lights are meshed and the rears could be but I'd rather not. Now to find a supplier who's not going to stuff me around too much.

Thanks again all.
