XXX-1.8T - January 27th, 2003 at 08:52 PM

Hey guys ive had my car parked at my uncles panel shop waiting for the rear to get resprayed and his workers are complaining to me the car only shift in 1st and reverse.

What do u guys think the prob is, his workers reckon the linkage has loosened up or something, but how as the car hasnt been driven only around the garage?

Any suggestions also is it expensive to fix :( ?

there is a plate underneat the shifter base which is held on by two bolts, it could be out of alignment.

This plate determines the limits of the travel of the shifter, if it is out of position u can have trouble getting into certain gears like u describe

Costa

i assume we are talking Beetle here - yes?

It could also be the rear coupling where it connects to the gear box. Under the plate under the rear seat. That could have "collapsed" spur of the moment and would cause those problems.

I doubt it is synchros. If it was synchros you would still be able to get the gears, just grind.
The only other thing i could think of is a broken hockey stick in the nose cone. "Fairly" easy to fix - but the motor and box need to come out.

yeah beetle we are talking about, that thing in the rear seat if it has collapsed is it expensive to fix or isi it a little thing that needs tightening

thanx........

Replacing it should be easy enough unless the square headed grub screw that lock the coupling onto the shafts have siezed. Beetles should be ok but splt kombis are always siezed cos they're exposed to road crap.
