Is my trans-axle any good?? (another question!!)
Chewy - December 31st, 2004 at 10:33 AM

I have a tranny here which I have never properly driven and dont know if it is decent..
There were very minute metalic particals on the magnetic drain plug when I drained the oil, is this normal?
The input shaft into the box also wobbles around a bit, but I know for a fact that the oil seal is completely shot, is the wobbling normal?
The oil is black but doesnt have a metalic tinge to it and I looked at the reverse gear through the oil filll plug and it is fine.

Does it sound like it would be ok?

Question #2
Well just today I noticed the second drain plug under the diff.. took out plug and it has a heap of pieces of spring stuck to it.
The springs pieces appear to be the type used on grease seals, like an O-Ring made out of a spring.

Any ideas where this came from, is there a seal somewhere in the tranny that uses on of these types of O-ring springs?

Please help!

Actually there is a small amount of miniture metal specks in the oil.

the metallic specks u see are probobly bits of syncro that have worn away and if worn syncos dont bother u then this isnt a major problem. as for the play in the input shaft i have no idea.

Thanks, just hoping its not a bearing starting to let go :puke

If the metal particals are stuck to the magnetic drain plug they would be bits of bearing or gears, it is normal to have a bit , but not big bits of cause.
Syncros are made of bronze and don't stick to the drain plug so its a bit hard to tell if they are ok with out driving it.
A bit of wobble in the input shaft is normal too.

Ahh sweet, sounds like it'll be worth putting in..

Its a 1200 66 box, are these very tuff? Are there any problems I should watch out for?
