oil pressure light flashes on for a bit on start up (fixed), and timing question...
Anthiron - January 3rd, 2005 at 02:47 PM

for the last couple of days my oil pressure idiot light flashes on and off for a couple of seconds when i start my car. the car is parked nose down on a slight hill and it doesnt seem to do it if its parked on the flat. only does it when the engine is cold and after a couple of taps of the accellerator it doesnt come on again. whats up with this?

also today i did my tappets and timing and tuned my carb. however if i set timing to 7.5 BTDC its a little gut less down low however it idles nice and runs the niceset at this timing mark. it gives nice power if set at about 12 BTDC however this is way more advanced than i am told to have it. right now i left it at about 9 BTDC which seems ok but truth will be told tonite after work when the air is colder whether it leaves a flat spot or not.

engine is a 1600 single port (recently rebuilt) with a 30pict 2 carb running the oil bath air cleaner and 009 dissy.

tappets are set to 006" and points gap at 016" spark plugs are fine with gap set 026".

do i need a bigger carbie? would a better air cleaner with a higher flow help?

ihave a 34 pict carb off my superbug however it wont fit on my single port manifold. could i buy an adapter for this? however ive heard 009s dont like 34 pict carbs and ill have a flat spot.

Hi, I have more or less the exact same setup as you except I am running a AP2 cam. If the idiot light flickers a bit on a startup on the hill check your oil level. the sump level might be a bit to low for the pickup tube to get lots of oil at startup.

I used to have an old 1200 oil bath air cleaner on my 1600 SP and changed to a K&N style one. Made it a fair bit gruntier and moved the rev limit up a bit. Could go up to about 50mph in 3rd gear. Thats still with a 30 PICT-2 carb.

You can get a step down spacer that fits the 34mm carb to the 30mm manifold.

009's will tend to give u flatspots anyway because they dont have vacumn advance. get an older dizzy with vacumn advance. gives u better economy as well as throttle response

Get an oil presure gauge and then you will know what is really happening.

The light doesn't seem a problem, especially if it's only just after start up and only when parked on a steep hill. Don't overfill the oil if it's correct when parked on flat ground, but do check to see if it's low.

oil level is fine.surprisingly my engine leaks virtually no oil for an air cooled VW.

after driving home from work tonite with shit all power because the timing must be to advanced. tomorrow i will take it back to TDC and then advance it bit by bit and take it for quick drives untill i get the best result. i hope i get gat it nice like this.

ive had it running with no flat spot before with the 009. perhaps ive got an air leak in my carby. there are numerous redish deposits around the gasgets etc on the carby where it has been leaking ever so slightly i guess however i rebuilt the carb not long ago. maybe ill get another rebuild kit and do it again and make sure double that everything is tight.

che castro are u running a K+N pod filter? or a differnt style? if its a pod did u fit a 50mm one straight to the top of the carb or is it a larger filter with a flange attached?

and42 i have all of the guages i need bar an oil pressure guage however these arent going in untill i make up my new dash and when i do that ill buy an oil pressure guage.

well i fiddled with the timing and got it pretty good might just retard it a little bit when the blisters go away on my hands from turning the engine using the fan belt (my engine has really high compression and wont turn if i just turn the generator nut and yes my pulley is tightend properly.

anyway i replaced the oil in the air cleaner with some fresh stuff and that might have helped as it was pretty black..

ive got it parked on the flat now till it cools down to double check oil level. however i have to leave it parked on the hill normally as there is no where else:(

Hey Nick, what type/grade of oil do you use

Anthiron - January 4th, 2005 at 04:38 PM

castrol GTX2

Anthiron - January 4th, 2005 at 04:39 PM

it wasnt low but only just above the bottom line so i put a wee bit more in and we shall see if it still does it.

Che Castro - January 4th, 2005 at 06:00 PM

try to keep it at the upper line, i would get oil surge sometimes if it was around the lower mark and i went fast through a long sweeping corner.

The air filter I am running is a generic taiwan one, like the one at www.beetleracing.com.
The stock oil bath filters are better at filtering though.

hmm ok oil light problem seems to be fixed now just needed a little bit more in there.

BUT IT STILL WONT BLOODY TUNE UP PROPERLY.

ive been tuning it in the middle of the hot QLD day would this affect the combustion etc? it seems to run ok after i tune it in the heat but when i drive to and from work at night when the air is colder it runs like a shit box. gutless with a huge semi flat spot.

i tried adjusting the mixture on the carby after work tonite but that didnt help so ill try the timing tomorrow for one last time and then if i cant get it nice ill get eirinns dad (mechanic) to look at it:(

wish i could get it to run nicely again its bloody annoying.:cry

Desert Moose - January 5th, 2005 at 01:49 AM

I have know idea if this is it ,but its not that hard to do anyways......

here is my story.....
Once upon a time, a long time ago….lol:thumb
I had a problem just like that. You turn the car when it was hot and it would run fine but at night when it was cool it would run like a Bitc#. Funny thing is it was a Baja as well and I worked at a B/club….lol.:P

It turned out to be the 009 dizzy, It was heating different to the block and was giving a bad earth. All I did was put an earth wire from the Phillips head screw under the cap clip to a bolt on the motor….. Fixed it up an never had the problem again:thumb

hmm ok thats an interesting idea ill try that if latest effort hasnt fixed it.

thanks moose.

Anth...
does this "electrical " problemo happen at nite ...ie when lights are on
had a55 oval once and just ran like s''''t when dark and discovered the light switch was caktus.
also check your rotor button in the 009... may just be cactus too

Anthiron - January 6th, 2005 at 01:05 AM

the dissy is not very old...in fact id almost say near new, the rotor button is A1

and no it doesnt seem to be related to when the lights are on just when the air is cooler.

i tuned it about 20 mins ago outside some poor buggers house under a street light and then roared off at full throttle to test it out going thru the gears lol my twin cannons prolly woke up the whole of shelly beach.

got it to run pretty sweet, and this is tuning it at night time so ill see what it does int eh heat tomorrow and if its not fixed ill try mooses idea.
