crank case pressure? or mabye a seal gone. I used to have problems with crankcase pressure until i installed a breather tank. is your engine std or worked,m if its std, check the breather system.

I do believe I read in an original glovebox owners manual for a Microbus that 1 litre per 5000km was normal usage. If someone has an original glovebox manual and could check it up, or if someone knows of where in the manual it is written it may help. The oil may be sliding down the bores and being burnt continuously and slowly, so as to not show any smoke etc.

a Few years ago, GMH had to change the dipsticks on their new commodore engines...
as when filled to the mark on the dipstick... and not checked until an oil change was due...

the engine could run out of oil.... [some did]

so New dipsticks with a higher FULL Mark were introduced...

and so, many New & old commodore engines use OIL...

this happens with engines from all makes....

My thoughts are: if an engine uses oil, its helping lubricate the piston & rings etc much better than those that don't use any oil at all.....

Just remember though

VWs don't leak oil.....

they are just marking their territory :)

If it's not leaking out, it has to be getting burnt one way or another. In my opinion (and I'm no Mechanic, far from it) I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it started making strange noises or started smoking, just need to keep an eye on the oil level and who doesn't need to do that anyway.

It's more than that. In the 1978 kombi manual it says that oil consumption can be up to 1.4 l per 1000km! See p.56:

Bloody heck, That is like running a two stroke. I knew I read it in the manual.

aggri1 - January 13th, 2005 at 12:26 PM

Hmm, that's strange. Mine always drips a little, but in 3500km between services, the oil level didn't seem to go down. (I have found a money machine - she makes oil!)

1.4l/1000km sounds like an awful lot indeed!

Anthiron - January 13th, 2005 at 03:38 PM

if your oil level goes up u could have fuel leaking into the sump.
