Iam new to the world of VW's having just bought a 1967 1300 custom with a 1600 single port motor.

the stupid question is....

I suspect the last owner put the plug leads back on the car in the wrong order as car turns over and seems to only fire on one cylinder.
what order do the leads go in, looking at the dizzy from the front? eg. back left goes to back right cylinder etc?

Thats looking at the car from behind.

The firing order is 1..4..3..2

Number 1 piston is firing when the dizzy rotor cap is at about the 5 oclock position.

There should be a small notch on the rim of the dizzy to indicate #1. The rotor moves clockwise. With this plus what Sax said you should be able to check that all the leads are connected correctly.

but iam a bit of a goose... if iam looking at the car from behind what lead goes where?

3...1
4...2

if 3 is back left on the dizzy what plug does it attach to ?
and so on...?

If the firing order is 1..4..3..2

and the rotor spins clockwise

then that would mean that 3 is about the 11 o'clock post on the distributor


So on the dizzy #1 is @ 5 o'clock

#4 is @ 8 o'clock

#3 is @ 11 o'clock

#2 is @ 2 o'clock

That layout is the cylinders (it's more of a top view relly). Note front means front ie nearest the flywheel. Rear means rear ie nearest the back bumper.

Cylinder layout is:
#1 cylinder is at the front drivers side
#2 is directly behind #1
#3 is front pass side
#4 is directly behind #3

To connect leads:
Take off the cap and find the notch on the rim of the dizzy. This is firing point for #1. Put the cap back on, mark on the cap where the notch is with a permanent marker or remember where it is.
Connect the lead from the front right plug (#1) to the dizzy terminal directly over the notch location.
Going clock-wise around the cap, connect the next lead to the pass side rear plug (#4)
Connect next lead clockwise to pass side front plug (#3)
Next one has only one place to go which is drivers side rear plug (#2)

so #1 piston is on the right, # 2 piston behind it on the right and so on?

so presumebly the leads on the dizzy should be

back left.....back right

front left....front right

Like Sax said, although we're happy to help it will save you much time and frustration if you get a copy of Muir's book. Quite a funny book (for a service manual) and packed with all the basic info you wil need for servicing all dubs. An absolute essential for anybody planning to work on their own car. Available from Amazon, lots of dub shops and some book shops (I got mine at Borders).

Guys

I have followed the instructions but the notch on the dizzy is between two leads.. would #1 go left of the notch or right?

I have tried both but the thing will still not start. I have good sparks and fuel but it will not fire up. any ideas?
