Does any know the corect size tap for the door screws on my splitty. I think they are the same as a beetle. My old man reckons there may be different pitches for metric threads

Should be the same.
I used stainless so they are available new from most fastner supply companies.

The kombi door screw thread is 8mm x 1.25mm pitch. Same thread as the beetle, but I've found the screws in the kombi to be 19mm long, while the beetle are only 16mm long. Of course, there may have been changes with different models and over the years the screws can get swapped around.
And your Dad is correct, there is 8mm x 1.0mm pitch threads, but not in the door screws.
