What fuel do you use?
64vwmark - January 14th, 2005 at 11:49 AM

Just wondering what fuel other people are using. I'm using Ultimate 98 with a lead substitute additive.

Beaker - January 14th, 2005 at 11:55 AM

I run mine on premium, it pings on standard unleaded.

barls - January 14th, 2005 at 11:56 AM

i use optimax or bp ultimate in my t4 2L but only run the bp preimuim in the stock bug. i also run flashlube in both

PurpleT3 - January 14th, 2005 at 12:01 PM

I noticed that Mobil now have a 96 RON PULP (Mobil 6000) which is a bit cheaper, as well as the old 98 RON (Mobil 8000). Probably in an effort to pick up some of the market for cars which used to run on LRP.

BiX - January 14th, 2005 at 12:36 PM

only 98 octane, no lub or additive.

jo_tas - January 14th, 2005 at 01:09 PM

i run mine on premuim.. dunno what octane... no flashlube... i seemed to get pre-ignition with flashlube (??)

vwtyp2 - January 14th, 2005 at 03:50 PM

mobil 8000 pulp in both the kombi and the golf.
mobil lrp in the beetle

68AutoBug - January 14th, 2005 at 05:47 PM

You shouldn't be using LRP in Anything...
its garbage....
I wouldn't put it in My lawn mower....
It will be phased out shortly.... Its no longer available in country areas...
Use unleaded with flashlube or Premium with flash lube....

depends on Your engine.... what it likes....

the 96 RON sounds good to Me...

jonno-t3 - January 14th, 2005 at 05:58 PM

regular premium unleaded...interesting note however...everyones different in what they use...but i use the flash lube stuff...bought a small single use bottle and thn a large bottle from repco...put one dose in every fill time..but my vw mechanic actually told me that he has been driving his bug for 6 years now...160km's a day...and he never uses the stuff....all he puts in is premium...
just interesting...even after he told me..i still use it...just in case...not that i dont believe or trust him...its just for my own piece of mind really

Is the flashlube expensive?

barls - January 14th, 2005 at 06:33 PM

not really its about $90 for the kit that automaticly add it to the manifold or about $20 for a 1 litre and you add it to the tank when you fill up

BP Ultimate when we can find a BP, put Shell Optimax in it on the way back from Byron cause it was that or run out of petrol somewhere on the Pacific Hwy.

Brum seems to like the Ultimate. Haven't used any additives or anything yet and she hasn't missed a beat.

ruckus - January 14th, 2005 at 06:51 PM

I only use BP ultimate now and the change in the colour of the fuel filter stands as remarkable testament to the crap that she used to run on.

ancientbugger - January 14th, 2005 at 06:51 PM

In my beetle I use standard unleaded but occasionally I,ll stick in premium but when my sister had it she only ever put in standard unleaded and that was from about 8 years back and as far as we know it's always had the same. I know it used to have fitted as standard a catalytic converter but no additives have been put in since either of us have owned it. In the buggy though I stick anything in it (fuel wise that is!) depending on how much money the wife ahs allowed me to spend!

I have a 2.0L New Beetle, and, well, from my vast experience driving and stuff (im 21) and my awesome knowledge of cars (minimal), i use Caltex Vortex when i can find it, but any premium is aight if I cant get Vortex.

I find that mine runs sweet on Vortex, and i can get over 500km on a full tank, and thats just short runs to uni and shops and that.

As for other stuff that goes into my little car, i have no idea really. That lies in the hands of the mechanic guy @ RUF!!

G'day,
I've tied all sorts of combinations and brands of fuel in the Desert Splitty (1600 TP) and honestly I think if you find something that works for you stick with it. I generally use straight unleaded cause thats all I can get out here in the Desert and I usually put about 30mls of Auto Trans Fluid in with it any time I fill up (as upper cylinder lubricant). ATF is less than 1/2 the price of Flashlube and an old mechanic told me thats all they ever used back in the old days. Yesterday I pulled into the Shell in Halls Creek and realised I was at the Leaded bouser so thought "what the heck" and filled up with it and the Splitty seemed to perform better than before, but who knows?
Cheers, Ian.

I lent my sister my '64 1300 after she blew the engine up in her '66.
I got it back after 3 months, and it was running like a bucket of shit.
I took it to my friendly local VW repairer, when he got it apart, it had dropped a valve seat.
upon further inspection of the car, there was about 5 or 6 small tubes of upper cylinder lube in the luggage area, around the fuel tank.
I attribute the dropped valve seat to the fact that my sister used unleaded fuel with an upper cylinder lube, seeing as how I had been running the car for the previous few years on Mobil LRP, and never had any issues.
I've been using Mobil LRP in all my aircooled VW's since I got my first one, and never had a fuel issue.

littlebugga - January 15th, 2005 at 09:43 AM

i use premium unleaded, optimax. but i accidently filled half the tank with LRP 2 days ago after a long drive... maybe why its been coughing and farting since..:o

Beaker - January 15th, 2005 at 10:16 AM

Yes LRP is shit. VWtyp2, it's going to take a lot longer than 3 months to do that sort of damage. I'd put it down to normal wear and tear. Standard unleaded used with the correct amount of upper cyl. lube would not cause that problem, but if you're going to blame anything, I'd blame that LRP shit you've been using for years.

Avgas! just a pain being chased off Sydney airport!

Dan;)

tassupervee - January 15th, 2005 at 04:03 PM

Be a bit fussy who you tell about using the avgas tho.

The fines attached to running it in anything other than some categories of Cams administered motorsport AND purchased with an appropriate permit/logbook/whatever it is called, are absolutely astronomical.

I will stand corrected here but i believe the fines start possibly as high as $50000 for an INDIVIDUAL not to mention what the supplier can get hammered with.

The EPA take a very dim view of its use now on the road.

For the record tho, I use PULP with a bit of flashlube in the Formula Vee. I tried it on Super PULP (Optimax) once and no matter what we did with the jetting and timing, it just pulled a tree....go figure!

Happy green fuelling!
