have just bought a 61 bug but no keys. Took the 2 live wires off the backof the switch to turn the motor over but obviously i need a key. Do i remove the ignition switch and then hand it over to a locksmith?? Any ideas on cost??

try your notch key sometimes they are that worn that they work. otherwise get a new ignition barrel and put that in and get your door locks rebuilt.

if it is the original one you could get a blank and maybe give it to a locksmith??

Yea get it home this afternoon. Car is so solid and original . So happy but will remain daily driver and a bit rough round the edges. I'll take the barrel out and sort it that way , worry about locking later!

I think the last time i got one done it was about 20 to $30 ..... Take the door handle to locksmith as well ... n ask if they can cut key and make sure the locks both match the one key

Talk it up the Maroubra Locksmiths in Maroubra road i think just up from the shops

cost me $15. they have a littel device which works out what shape the key needs to be and cut it to match. take the car, or lock in and they can do it on the spot.

if you pull out the ignition switch and take it in, there is a series of number on the side. from those they can cut you a new key in minutes. did it on my buggy.

Might be a good idea to change the locks on that car..... seeing as the original owner (the bloke who did a runner to escape rent or whatever) probably still has the old ones ?

Would be too easy for him to pinch it then if he ever saw it again......

Just an idea my man.

Pretty easy to get it done , pull out handle and on the side will be a code stamped on the housing usally numbers n letters , ignition will be the same thing all european cars have codes on them , I found this exciting fact out in my 13 years of being a locksmith woo hoo, If you cant find any one to do it locally which is hard to believe , give me a u2u with whatever numbers you find and I'll post u a key. Easy. They shouldn't charge any more than $20. Some guys might have the "vw" shape in the head if your lucky.

Okay i have got the ignition out , i'll pop back down and take the ddor handle off and see the guys in Maroubra and get them changed and matched. Battery charged t'w so maybe we have lift off????

No numbers to go from and they wanted $40 + gst for a key to be made!

So i had a quick look at the ignition and worked out how to get the barrel out (tiny c-clip). Then using an old vw key i placed that in the barrel and then filed the brass keys flat to match the new key.

Put it back together and it works like a treat! Saved myself over $40 aswell , so happy i treated myself to a 6 pack for the garage tonight!
