getting heads off
BiX - January 26th, 2005 at 12:40 PM

I am just rebuilding a little 1600tp for a bash car. i have never really done much work like this before. i have taken the heads of other vw engines. but these seem to be stuck on really well. are there any tricks to getting them off. and yes all 8 head studs are undone.

rubber mallet used with discretion

With the rocker gear off, so both valves are closed. A good blast of air through the spark plug hole - an adapter would help here.

Or hook up a starter motor.

Note, this does not work if there is a hole in the piston!

just give em a light tap with a mallet or hammer and rock them back and forth. worked every time for me. Same with cylinders.

got them off. we though it may have been rings which was giving the low compression. but one of the valves, is 3 sided, and also cupped........ think its time for some new exhaust valves.
