Felony - January 28th, 2005 at 09:21 PM

Idle has been going up and down a bit, engine stalls, and runs rough all of a sudden, is it the hot weather or could something be wrong?
cheers

Hi

It could be the rubber boots on the inlet manifold.

pod - January 28th, 2005 at 09:30 PM

he means it could be air leeks in the intake side of things:(

ah i see, is it a big job to change the inlet manifold gasket if thats the one hes referring to? its a single carb 1600cc
cheers

Hi

The inlet manifold is in 3 pieces, the centre T and 2 alloy ends. The rubber boots between the T and the alooy ends can perish, the ycan be changed in the car but its a a pain, its easier to drop the motor. The idel jet can also block, its on the left side of the carb, its made of brass and has hex head.

did they come out with different carbs or just the single barrel stromberg? are the boots expensive?
cheers

Hi

The stock carb was solex. Not sure of the price of the boots.

people did put strombergs on them but the solex is a much better idea. it should have a 34pict solex single carbie. check the manifold gasget where the carbie connect to the top of the manifold as well as the rubber boot things.

also try draining your float bowl and check for gunk that comes out with the fuel. if u get alot of crap coming out. replace your fuel filter and check your jets for blockages.

does it run differently in different temperatures?

HELP

my old bug is doing this today... engine runs rough and stalls when i stop. but i can start it and drive off again

it's never done this before - today was very hot though

mine is a good old stock 1200A does anybody have any ideas?

akean1 - January 29th, 2005 at 09:59 PM

could be not letting enough fuel through when throttle butterfly is fully closed. there are tiny jets that may need blowing clean. if you take off the carb and turn it upside down(watch out for the fuel in bowl) you can see them. maybe get an air compressor blower onto it

this is what the rubber boots look like on the inlet manifold for 32pict carb (1600 motor)

Lams - January 30th, 2005 at 10:34 PM

thanks akean1

the RACQ man found out the problem today as it broke down first time ever for me :(

looks like I have no fuel pressure!

Lams - January 31st, 2005 at 05:01 PM

ok! idiot! it was only the fuel pump's earthing wire disconnected itself...

took me a whole day to figure that out!

but now my car sounds like a harley - very annoyingly loud
also backfiring more

any ideas what's going on? a hole in the exhaust perhaps?

Both of those problems sound like an exhaust leak.
