tyres hitting coils
akean1 - January 30th, 2005 at 04:11 PM

ive changed the disks on my 71 super and the tyres are rubing on coil springs. are 195/60/15's to big? are the disks wrong? what's going on here!:cry

barls - January 30th, 2005 at 04:13 PM

the offset is wrong mate to fix this you ether have to change to maxx springs for the extra clearance or use a different wheels

akean1 - January 30th, 2005 at 04:16 PM

they are stock rims what size are stock tyres?, how much are max springs worth?

barls - January 30th, 2005 at 04:25 PM

about $900 a set 195/55/15 is the stock size i thought

akean1 - January 30th, 2005 at 04:30 PM

900 ouch!:cry

barls - January 30th, 2005 at 04:32 PM

yes mate they are costly but they also are adjustable. im not sure one the tire size but that is close

ragged - January 30th, 2005 at 04:34 PM

were the tyres touching the strut before you replaced the disc's or have you replaced the tyres also?

Cheers Dave

ruckus - January 30th, 2005 at 04:43 PM

I got some 165/80s for sale. They should be a bit narrower which would help?

akean1 - January 30th, 2005 at 04:45 PM

i replaced the tyres aswell, didnt notice if it was rubbing before, still had the guards on then, is there a difference in 71 and 72 disks? i might of stuffed up if there is.
thanks for the offer ruckus, but ill be sticking to 65 or lower. it had 80 risers on it when i baught it and looked a bit like a 4WD

Shouldn't be any difference with the disc's that would change the offset. You did put the inner wheel bearing in didn't you? Of course you did? Put the 195's on the rear and get yourself some 165's or smaller for the front. good luck!

akean1 - January 30th, 2005 at 05:13 PM

i didnt put the bearing in the first time they went back on, and wondered why they wouldnt sit right:duh bearings are deffinatly in, changeing the tyres to the back sounds like a good idea. does anyone know if brm's have a different offset to stockies?

Bizarre - January 30th, 2005 at 06:21 PM

cant be certain but i would be amazed if they were the same.

Supers are a bitch at the best of times to get wheels to fit.
Generally Empi 8's arfe about the only off the shelf mag that fits.

That said i am running 195's 15's on a 75 super at the moment but that is a 2 bolt rackand pinion beetle not a 3 bolt box.
And my 6" chromes are sticking too wide by a fraction. (getting more struts and wheels soon)

Have to say, i cant say I have seen supers running BRMs, let alone with 195's before. Both are readily available, so the must be a reason why not...... :jesus

ruckus - January 30th, 2005 at 09:14 PM

maybe you could get the 175/65s I got? Bridgestone make 'em

akean1 - January 30th, 2005 at 10:04 PM

i might even go narrower to be safe, id spew if i forked out more for another miss match

68AutoBug - January 30th, 2005 at 11:22 PM

The original tyre sizes were 155 SR x 15" - 165 SR x 15" and optional [in the UK] was 175/70 SR 15"

You can also go to 135 x 15 or 145 x 15 for the narrow front wheel look...??

Remembering that most of the braking is done with the front tyres..... [on all cars]

vw54 - January 31st, 2005 at 09:43 AM

You can purchase new adjustable front struts, these have smaller diameter springs which will clear the tyre you have fitted.

Available from Vintage at Campsie 02-9789-1777

I run 195/60r15 on teh front of the L bug with no problem. They do come close to the guards ans sometimes do catch a little. but only under full compression. I went and got some 6 inch rims made with a slightly better offset and now they are fine.

akean1 - January 31st, 2005 at 04:21 PM

adjustable struts from vintage (they take yours and rebuild them) at $1100

vw54 - January 31st, 2005 at 04:32 PM

Yep thats what it costs.... or less
all new with smaller diameter coil springs so no tyre rubbing .... and ride height fully adjustable ... price the cost of new struts fitted and see what you come up with.

Or you could rebuild your wheels and change the off set and a similar cost if they are steel wheels, bad luck if you have mags...............

akean1 - January 31st, 2005 at 04:36 PM

the cheapest i coul get new struts fitted was $300, low quality shocks though

vw54 - January 31st, 2005 at 04:41 PM

yeah and you will still have the tyre rubbing problem.

Do you have Steel rims or Mags ??? fitted

akean1 - January 31st, 2005 at 04:47 PM

ive got stock steel at the moment but i wanted BRM's pretty badly

karmen - January 31st, 2005 at 11:17 PM

years ago heard of this prob with rubbing on a super
was the wrong rims off a type 3 i vaguely recall

akean1 - January 31st, 2005 at 11:27 PM

that could be the problem, i got a couple of rims from mitches to put the new tyrs on, ill check that out
thanks
