Just got this distributor today from koolkarmakombi, he told me it was a Type 3 distributor, but i'm starting to have my doubts now..

Also, the rotor from my current distributor doesn't fit this new one, as the shaft on the new one is too wide in diameter, But the distributor cap DOES fit the new one!

009? or not 009??

The 009 bit in the markings is what made me think it was a 009..

Definetely not a 009. Looks like VW OE to me.

OE? whats that? and any idea what model/year its from? the plate in it is kind of circular, whereas the ones in the pics in the manual look more triangular...?

umm, the part number is in the first post... is there somewhere i can enter this number to give me amanufacture date or something?

that part number tells me its a 009 but 009's never had vacumm advance. and that one has the vacumm advance biscut.

What makes a 009 dizzy one of the best is that it a centrifugal advance dizzy. What this means is it manually advances when you get to about 2500rpm. A vacuum dizzy will not do this so if your looking for the performance of a 009 that one wont give it ....................:thumb

Nah, i want an original type 3 distrubutor... i've talked to someone who has run both on a type 3, he swears by the orignal vacuum ones.

And that number is taken straight off the case of the distributor!

The dizzys for late model type 3s are not vac advance, they are dual advance ie vac and mech advance. I have just replaced the 009 on my fasty after many years with an original SVDA unit. And I've gotta say the original unit shits all over the 009. It's much smoother and has no hesitation or flat spots. As far as I understand it, the 009 is not that good, it is fairly poor quality and doesn't have a particularly good advance curve, it is just more commonly available and does a reasonable job on a wide range of cars.

This is my little spiel, and I could be wrong:
The 009 gets it's reputation as a "performance" distributor as most race cars use mechanical advance distributors. This is great if you are running flat out, or at fairly constant revs, such as in racing or on stationary motors. But on the street where revs vary from idle to flat out, the mech only advance dizzy can be a bit slow to advance, leaving you short of power until it's fully advanced when the revs get to about 2-3K.

On a stock type 3 (or type 1) 1600 motor, an OE single vac dual advance distributor is better than a 009. A 009 will work, but not as well.

There is an OE dizzy which ends in 009, but the rest of the part no is different. I cann't find the part no you've given listed anywhere. Can you post a photo looking down the top so we can see the inside?

well it was my dizzy and I know its a svda vw original one, from what? dunno, but its the same as one I modified the advance for for a t1 engine I built. I simply went to mick motors and got a cap, rotor etc. He looked at it and got them off the shelf.

the one in the manual is vacuum advance only ie old, 1960 something. like on the printout and like the one I am holding. Thats the old T3 dizzy and I did not send you that as it would not work well on your car.

the one next to it is like the one I sent you, as a total freeby! It appears exacty the same as the one that is in your car now. Check the piccies. Also carefully read the old post again.

Go to a parts shop and get them to fit a bosch rotor to it.

Note there are no point fitted as I took them out to check the play and the points screw.

It is not a 009 despite the numbers on the side.

If it bothers you too much get your mechanic to use the top plate out of the dizzy I sent you in your current one, wherever it came from.

Like KKK said, the best I can find is that it either came from a kombi or a carbed Type 4. Either way, it definitely isn't a 009 and would probably work better than a 009. Put it on, set it up and go for a drive. If you don't like it then take it off.

OK, i'm going into the workshop on thursday to put it in.
Spent this morning giving it a bit of a clean and getting the mechanisms working smoothly, although i couldn't get it as much apart as i wanted, the pin in the drive gear at the bottom refused to budge when i tried to drive it out.. oh well..

I'll try putting the whole thing in the car first, if it doesn't seem to like it i'll just swap the plates over.

Hehe thanks, i've always loved mechanical stuff, getting old car parts to work properly etc.
Probably comes from growing up around old british cars, Land Rovers, Humbers, Morris commercials.. lol... my dad was a car nut.

Well, its in and running beautifully!
We ended up using just the plate out of the one koolkarmakombi sent me as after to going to three different places we could not find a rotor to fit..
It seems that the one that koolkarmakombi sent me is alater version of the i already had, becuase it has a one peice point system instead of the two piece. My mechanic was happy about that LOL.
The vacuum advance unit on my old distributor was worn where it connects to the point plate, had a lot of free play, luckily we managed to scrounge around and find a good replacement one, so it all worked out in the end!

I'm happy now
