killakornkobb - January 31st, 2005 at 08:13 PM

im getting a lot of back fireing, scares the shit outta me.. first time i thought i blew a tyre or somthing

they started yesterday, and previous to that (saturday) i was getting a thump/thud/knocking kind of sound from the rear of the car.

the car had been sitting since 21st of jan and only started on friday the 28th after that when my dad checked the battery (i was away for the week)

before i left there were no problems at all

Is it back-firing (that is through the carb/air-cleaner) or is it firing unburnt fuel?

If it's the first then the timing is probably the issue. If it's the second, check a few things, are all the plugs firing?, is it running real rich with an exhaust leak?, is the aircleaner clogged?

The last one happened to me once on the way back from a khanacross. The motor was so choked it would die every 15 minutes or so doing 60Kmh. Until we figured out what it was, it was shooting 2 foot flames out the exhaust on trailing throttle. My very proper english wife was following me one night and told me later "your car farts flames!". She thought it was cool, women, you never can tell.

air cleaner sounds the problem!!

fuel filter is full of shit aswell..

i have a K&N filter that keeps falling off.. it is attatched now (more securely but it is useing a saw blade as a collar because the neck wasnt tall/long enough

when it was falling off, when i went to re-attatch is, it was kind of scratching the metal from the top of the carb up and that could have gotten in..

i dont know anything about anything mechanical, so im too scared to pull anything off/out

will it cost me an arm and a leg to get it looked at by Volkspower, or similar?

Nah, about $100 bucks for your average decent tune up on VWs I think, least that's about what I paid.

Mechanical stuff is not that hard too, do you have any petrol head mates? ask them. Or, buy the idiot book and read it carefully before you do anything.

Exact same thing is happining to me, only while the car warms up. Just had the solex carbies repaced with bigger empi ones. Dont know if I should take it back to the guy that put them in, or what. Seems to run great when it has warmed up.

Any suggestions?

first thing id check is your points. make sure they are set to .016. replace your fuel filter. get your air cleaner on properly and make sure u have the carbie tuned to the higher flow of your K + N aircleaner. then if its still backfiring. try advanceing the timing the slightest bit (im talking like half a mm at a time) and taking it for drives. as usually if everything else is fine backfiring means your timing needs to be advanced a smidgeon.

above all else. buy a manual.

any holes in the exhaust???

Yeah Barry read my mind. Make sure your exhaust is tightened up. An air leak will cause a backfire.

If it is backfiring through the carb it could be a combination of timing plus a leak in the carb to distributor vacume line causing a lean condition. If it gets hot a lot quicker than before I would check this out.

And get your air filter fixed up properly quick smart.
Dirt getting into your engine is a bloody good way to kill it.
