Can someone identify this for me please? It is a brand called "Scintilla".
What engine is it for, industrial motor?
scintilla-vertex mags were on some early (36hp) industrial motors, but the caps looked different than the one shown. as for what it actually came off i can't help further.
I reckon its VW one Col. Seen whats looks like the same thing on 36HP Industrial motors used on irrigation pumps in the South Island of NZ.
There was one similar to this on ebay recently. Sold for a sqillion. US$ too.
Thanks for the info guys. It was given to me recently by a VERY good friend! :thumb
Col, it looks very much like the one on my brothers industrial motor (late 60's ex army). It's currently in his '55 beetle while the
original motor gets some work done.
Try holding one of the leads and give it a spin, you'll soon know if it still works.
Andy
hi there, are they costly to find or just hard to get,did they use these with the old crank style start up,like a motor bike only need bat for the
lights.
cheers :bounce
nice find Col !
better take care of that good friend that gave it to you
:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce
looks the same as the one on my big stroker motor (sitting in my shed) serious spark man! you don't need to hold the lead-just take the cap off, it dosen't take much spinning to get a good spark between the points. good find!!
hi there,i got one off these the other day of ebay,it is on a industrial motor,it has strange ends on the leads like electrodes, but the bits that
screw into the motor where the plugs go are missing, can i modifiy the magneto to take normal leads so i can but plugs into the motor like normal.and
also it has a crank start pulley and on the pulley there is a small pulley with a belt connected to a exturnel pump.half way down the oil tower its
got a angle made in it and that is connected to the exturnal thing which is running a belt from the crank..
i,ll post a pic
wrecker, I saw your other post; I'm also interested in some new leads/plugs, so I'll be curious to find out how much they're worth.
My industrial motor also has the crank handle, but I'd just about kill for that governor. Let me know if you're selling it please.
hi there still not sure what i am doing with the motor at the moment but i will keep it in mind
i was told that the motor was a 1300 with the clock reading only 90 hours and internally it is like new
it has a tag on tin wear with model no. ect.. but it has got 1584cm3 what does this reading stand for
cheers
My Brother bought a Scintilla magneto just like shown.
He had it overhauled at Hardimans (near Milperra), got the advance curve changed and re-magnetised the guts.
I like the shorting fixture on the side of the things :- you have to
short out the spark to stop the motor(no battery required)
hi there, how would you run this on a normal motor,as how would you connect the wiring which goes to the coil.and turning it off..
cheers
i have two of these engines with hour meters and governors etc mine are 1600 the cm3 means cc so it would be a 1600 i will sell the complete magneto
setup for mine ,i,m putting the motor in my split ,it reads 38 hours on the hour meter they are brand new motors ,the magneto is so you can hand crank
it ,so if you want to save money on batteries just leave it on ,just that you will look funny in the parking lot when starting it up p.s you can pull
it out and put a normal dissy in instead

I've U2U'd you. :thumb
Here is a picture of mine Col.
The leads come out of the side.
hi there, that looks great,so where is the wire going to go to kill the motor, does it go back into the old system so it still turns of the motor by
the key.
cheers :bounce
That's different to mine then Nathan, what brand is it? Any idea what it was off originally? It looks like the magneto is the only part that
hasn't been polished..... you may have to remedy that.
I think the magneto on the industrial engine is only useful for engines that maintain constant revs, and not for driving cars that use all the rev
range!
I've got one of these engines in my Ghia, and my splitty but I'm using a 009. They both had 50 and 90 hrs on. They are 1600's with 1500
heads on.
can you tell me are they okay as i am putting one in my split as well with a 009 distributer and different carby can you leave the hour meter on at
all i have not sussed this out yet would be keen to know
dave:o:o
Not sure about how you'd leave the hour meter on there! I took all that stuff off, and put new tinware and fan shroud on mine. There's a bit to do, but believe me you'll think its worth it when you drive the car! My splitty went from Sydney to Brisbane and back and purred all the way with a nice bit of torque to go with it, and excellent fuel economy.
yeah the magneto col has came of a racing beetle
the guy told me they are great if u keep them at high revs but no good for street use

We wired up the Kill switch to a large button on the dash (race car ).
Guess you could put a relay at the magneto and when power is cut to the relay then it kills the motor. (Normally closed contacts on relay - energising
the coil opens the kill switch and allows engine to run ).
That way if power fails then engine is cut.
