Oil Cooler Concerns
vern74 - March 7th, 2005 at 06:16 PM

When I had my beetle serviced 1000 or so ks ago the man told me that I had leaky oil cooler seals and they needed replacing
I have since done the road trip to the Sunshine Coast and have noticed more then usual amount of oil on the garage floor.
Can this become serious and leak out a shit load of oil and have the possibility of running out of the stuff while driving ?
Should I get it repaired NOW or in 800 ks when the next service is due ?

are you going to do this yourself or pay some one to do it??`

It is heaps easier if the motor comes out.

You can (have done it 2x this way - but i am a stubborn bugger) do it in car, but you have to pull the shroud and engine lid and.......

all for 2 x 20c seals!!

I would wait and do some othe things while you are at it.

If you are paying some one then it is a motor out job - say $200.
Do you need a clutch???

How important - well you should see the oil get worse. But i wouldnt wait a year, and i wouldnt take a day off tomorrow and do it either,.

NOW!

Engine lid off
Engine lid hinge bodyshell C-brackets off
Carby & intake manifold off
Throttle cable out,
wiring harness unplugged
Generator strap off
Lift Generator with fan housing off

Voila! Hello oil cooler!
Three nuts to undo and replace seals

thanks guys
Sounds like I could do it myself....with some help of course !
The mechanic also told me I should be doing something to the gearbox ???/ bits as well
So maybe he can do it all at the same time
Just after easter maybe
