Pulled the engine otu of the baja tonight to check the little noise problem out.:jesus
Got the heads off and i have found the problem .......
The top of the cylinders was not sealing properly against the head because the lip on top the the cylinders which slides into the head was about .1mm
too short to seal against the head (very deep flycut )
Therefore problem is much smaller than previously imagined.
I will attach some photo's of the heads to illustrate (if the attachment's work)
First photo shows the cylinder where it was leaking (look at marks on sealing surface at top and bottom)
Just have to put this in as well
The port job on these heads
What a bummer Dude!!! Must have run pretty rough. Looks like it ran for a while like that? What was the purpose of the deep fly cut, increase CR??? So
what's the fix for that???? Skiming the cyl's may leed to clearance problems, and even higher CR.
Nice port job
hey check ur studs in the case to make sure none of them have pulled
Engine ran beautifully
did aprox 50 miles before pulling the heads
Fix is going to be shave a bit off the bottom of the heads. Will increase cr marginally but this is good (so long as it dosent ping) as the engine has
VERY good cooling
Amazing, lucky you found it when you did. So how did you know? Just the noise you mentioned?
Yep just the weird noise ... kinda sounded like ffffffffffffft
It was strange tho as normally a leak like that would also pop on combustion.

Oh also .... the mechanics i use are goign to do the bit of machinign required for free for me
Woozy
what sort of motor was this again?
Its an 1835 that was bought second hand. It has standard cramk and rods, all balanced (pretty well too). HSC #2 cam, well worked standard casting
heads and twin Kadrons. Has type 4 oil cooler, porsche alternator and fan and an external cooler too.
Ran like a dream with the leak - just sounded funny.
Its my brothers motor.
It would seem that the studs were not torqued down correctly......
Coluld it be the old 92's are too thin and warped and are not sealing properly?
Dont want flames - just a thought :jesus
Are you sure you dont want to just whack in one of those aluminium shims . Be a lot easier...
I am just Joking.
Lucky you found this, If I were re-assembling this I would (valve grind paste) grind the barrels into the head " lightly" just to make sure
seal is intact.
Also if barrels are loose or others available , Place barrels in head and use straight edge to confirm heads are cut true.
The bolt's were definately torqued properly ..... went round each head at least 3 times when assembling with the good torque wrench (the one with
the slope and the pin not a dial one)
We measured the skirt's on the barrels and they were not quite (.1mm) long enough to hit the sealign surface. as a result the bottom cooling fin
on the head was against the top cooling fin on the barrel (see weird mark's around edge on head)
should be fixed by fri so hopoefully bug runnning again for the weekend
got to love that "easy access engine of a Baja "
absolutely
it takes me about 30 mins to get the engine ready to remove
that includes removign the rear bar and detaching the external oil cooler etc ....
To put engine back in just stick it on the trolly jack and push >
.............
Also found out that the longreach sparkplug threads which were supposed to have been put in those heads were not. They will be fixing that free too
......
Never forget ........ even cash jobs have warranty so long as you remember who did it
