Well my problem is i have just fitted a 2lt gearbox and motor in to a 73 bay kombi we bought and well i can select 1st and 3rd but not 2nd 4th or
reverse. A 2lt came out of it before we bought it. is this something that can be fixed by adjusting the plate under the gearshift lever or is it
because where the coupling is near the gearbox hits part of the subframe.
Any help would be appreciated and this is taking to long and i want to start driving this kombi and enjoy sitting high again
thanks
John

hey mate
make sure all bush's are ther and in good condition especially the one on the gearbox to the linkage but also the one infront of the shifter, sounds
mostly like gear shifter adjusment u have to set it in 2nd gear dont forget!!
read ya manual it tells ya about it!!

Yep, as Rhy's say's.
Also, it is possible to mount the GB so the selector doesn't line up properly. Was it easy to line up all the mounts? There should be no pressure on
them when it's just hanging.
Richard
Yes it was easy to mount the gearbox will have a go at setting the shifter. will find a manual and have a read before i have a go. thanks
Yep I recon it's the cross member is in the way!!
Andy has a cross member there but it has been narrowed by the factory just forward of the coupling on the GB selector.
The 2L selector must stick out slightly further than on the 1.8L GB
So if you bend that flange down out of the way it should allow the coupling to get a bit more movement and select all gears.
Let us know how it goes!

Are you sure that a 2L was in it before you bought it? I fitted a 2L gearbox into 72TWINCAB's ute to replace the 1600 box he had in it and we had exactly the same problem, the shift rod is longer in the earlier kombi's and we ended up cutting about 20mm out of the shift rod that goes from the gearstick to the gearbox.
I've only had experience with beetles and the shifter
plate etc.... many people have problems with 2nd & 4th
and can select reverse without pushing the lever DOWN..
which You shouldn't be able to do if the plate is correct..
It does sound like the shifter plate with 2nd & 4th missing
but it now looks like the rod is too long...
for the gearbox...
If the plate hasn't been moved - it still should be OK...
sounds like a Kombi problem....
best of luck

Ok well i have spoken to the previous owner and yes it was a 2lt so it should all be fine with the gear selector rod and i have made a bit more room
with the cross member near the coupling of the gearbox. he said it will be the plate under the gear shift. Well i have played round with that but
still no go. So is anyone able to post the section where it talks about adjust the plate from a manual as i do not have one yet . will be getting a
copy this week but can't wait that long. Or is there a web site that has it . Or if anyone is passing by and wants a beer or two i would love to see
you
Thanks
Hi Hohn,
I don't think a book can really help, its just an adjustmant thing... thats the reason why its so moveable....
in both directions...
It just depends how lucky=unlucky You are at adjusting it...
Do the bolts up fairly tight after placing the plate towards the RHS [from memory] then just move the gearlever from 1st to neutral to 2nd... if You
can't feel it going into 2nd..
loosen the 2 bolts very slightly.. and go 1st - 2nd...
then 3rd- 4th when You have them correct...
You will always find that you will have 1st & 3rd or 2nd & 4th
until You find the centre of the movement...
You need to have reverse - by Pushing the lever down -
and back.... There are many VWs around that You don't have to do that... You can get away with it if You don't hit reverse gear in normal
driving....
I always do, thats How I've found many gearshifts aren't adjusted correctly....
Once You have the 1st-2nd 3rd-4th gears and still need to adjust the plate for reverse.... mark the correct position on the boltheads and undo again
and move the plate to the RHS... this is so the lip on the LHS of the plate will make You push down on the gearlever to select reverse gear....
Best of Luck... Its a bit difficult to write it down....
I've only ever done beetles -'59 - 71 models & type 3s from 1964 - 2004...

Hi again John,
All I can find is an operators manual for a 1978 type 2
at: http://66.34.72.138/index.html
Its right down the bottom of the page after:
other sources of obselete documentation online
a few other manuals etc at this site - 1968- 72 type 2...
cheers

John,
I agree with 'andy' and '11cab'. The 2 ltr gearbox is 10mm longer in the gear carrier. I shoehorned one into a '68 bay. I had to reposition the
flexible coupling 8mm rearwards on the inner shift lever. This required cutting the shift lever and repositioning of the dimple. The shift housing
also had to be cut back to allow clearence for the coupling. I also had to reduce the shift rod tube to allow forward clearence. Give me a ring if you
like 3355 7943
John,
I've just had another thought (not bad for a bloke with a hangover - after the REDS won lastnight)
Just to confirm the above. Remove the flexible coupling and make sure you can select all gears. I know this will be difficult, but if you can, it will
rule out any problems with the gearbox itself.
Well i have looked at it and i have removed the coupling and i can select all gears by moving the shaft from the gearbox.
it seems that the coupling and shaft from the gearlever is hitting the sub frame not allowing it to go forward a few mm to select 2nd and 4th. Would
the front of the gearbox be able to drop down thus making the gear shaft Tube hit the subframe. i will try all possiblities before cutting and
shutting the tube itslef
this is now really starting to frustrate me but hey i am learning about Kombi's It looks like i will have to shorten the shaft due to the coupling
when in 2nd is right up next to the subframe and the end of the shaft is back about 5-10mm.
So where is the best palce to cut a section out. near the coupling or the other end where the join is.
Hi John,
Now we are making progress.

Hey John.
By shortening the shift rod, it won't gain the room you need near the sub frame will it?
As Grahame said, try pushing the GB back first to see if it helps.
Also are you able to just bend the flange of the sub frame down that the coupling hits to gain the extra travel you need? It is already slightly bent
up, so just bend it down out the way.
Richard
well i have the day off tomorrow so will try and see if i can move the box back abit. and yes i would be able to bend the subframe down abit but it is
actually hitting where the gear shift lever comes thru the floor into the coupling. the coupling hits a bracket towards the front. so my only hope is
to move the gearbox back.
Will let you know tomorrow how i go. fingers crossed
Bugger!
If moving back doesn't work, maybe you can re-drill the holes the grub screws go into. One where the shift rod joins, one on the GB selector.
Otherwise as you say you need to shorten it.
Good luck!
Well who ever said life was not meant to be easy they were certainly right.
After loosening all bolts for engine and gearbox, found the rear towbar was in the way so it had to come off and then moved engine mounts as far back
as they would go and the same with gearbox and then some adjusting with the gearshift plate and i know have all gears but 4th sometimes is hard to get
but will play round a bit more to do final adjustments. had to gring a bit of the tow bar and it is all back together.
thanks for all the help Richard and Grahame and everyone else
Yay!!
Time for a :beer
How'd the wiring issue go, or is that next on the list?
kool!!!!!
No the wiring is the next thing to do. Hopefully it will be just the regulator. will see what happens on Saturday when i have another day off hopefully
I had this same problem and the solution was to push the gearbox and the shifter as far apart as possible. Works a treat now. No probs at all. And i can not tell you how important the plastic selector guide at the front is.
well i found the gears but it was really hard to get into 2nd and 4th and would pop out of reverse so it was a case of shortening the selctor tube a bit. Sent it over to mac tune at Lawton and he has done a great job.
