doors on 68 beetle are sagging
replace door hinge pins i guess?
how/who/where
cheers all !
I got mine done at vintage a while ago. The pins are supposed to be able to be knocked out with a hammer and drift, but this is not usually the case with 40+ year old cars. The hinge sometiems might need to be heated up with a torch and the pin hammered out. The pin will be replaced, however if the hinge is worn out, it will need to be drilled oversize and reamed to fit an oversize pin. Apparently it is a PITA of a job to do. Cost me just under $300 for all four hinges which incl all new pins, reaming etc.
I had mine done on my KG by the local machinist. Took the hinges off the door and took them over. They were ready the next day for around $100 as I remember.
i think they are worn as the sag is very noticable, looks like some drilling is needed.
cheers for the info !
Are u sure its not where the hinge bolts to the body ,.....
good call, i'll adjust first
come to thuink of it the door can be lifted to shut perfectly. so my bits are deff. on the saggy side, but i;ll check it.
cheers
did my pins and reamed out to suit myself:thumb just cost me a little bit of my lunch times (fitter machinist by trade)
hey pod what should it cost on average cos there seems to be a big variation in prices
and what trade shop do i go to, name of trade etc
fitter and turner or what?
CHEERS !
usually an engineering shop , dont know on price , you can buy them from vw shops it all depends on how worn the hinges are
cheers !
dear mr skewy knock out the pins with a suitable sized drift, see if you can get ya hinges off with a liberal soaking of your prefered brand of lube/rust release agent.then stagger over the road and ingage 'magic Martin for a new pair of pins and a lend of correct sized reamer. if the hinges wont come off the body im sure it can be done on the body. the trick is aligning the door portion of the hinge vertically when reaming. clamps and wedges with door in the correct closed possie. I spose.
cheers, u2u'd ya
