Things I Learnt - Removing the speedo
phantom - March 18th, 2005 at 07:18 PM

Easy one, I am changing a speedo over tomorrow in my 69 bug, does it come out through the dash (into the cabin), or back through the boot?

If out into the cabin, do I need to remove the steering wheel?

You just loosen the two screws on either side of the speedo,
You Don't have to take them out as the speedo has
slots in it.. You just turn the speedo slightly Anti clockwise-
[ie. left hand side goes down] and pull it out backwards...

But before You do this....
You must pull out all the lampholders in the speedo...
there are 6 of them.... plus the fuel gauge wire..
You can write where they go on a piece of masking tape and wrap over each lamp as You take them out or just pull them out as its not too difficult to find out where they go, as the wires are different lengths..
the cable just unscrews from the speedo...

I recommend a couple of drops of oil into the speedo cable to lubricate the steel inner cable.... will make it last longer..

cheers

Things I learnt today while changing over my speedo:

- Don't assume that just because it is supposed to be bolted in with two bolts, that is all that's holding it.

- No matter how much you yank and pull on the damn thing, it is still a huge surprise to the system when the 4kg of silastic (that was holding the speedo in) actually breaks and you end up sitting on the driveway with a speedo in your hand.

- Bulbs - when you find a dead one, throw it straight away! Otherwise, you'll mix it in with the good ones, and that ain't fun.

- Turn the ignition off when changing the bulbs for the oil and generator

- The test light is only as good as the earthing point on the car. Earthing point...hmmm...thats right....

Apart form this,. all went well and I now have a speedo reading kilometres, not miles - perfect for driver training.

out of curiosity, how much did you pay for the km's speedo?

So how do you get the chrome speedo surround out?

My speedo came out but is now in pieces, glass, rubbers etc.
The surround is in there and wont move??
