What kombi oil filter?
mnsKmobi - February 10th, 2003 at 08:40 AM

Is there a particular brand of oil filter recommended for a 2l TIV motor? And where is a good place to get them?

The one I use is called a "RYCO Z-100" oil filter. I purchase them from Burson Automotive and have had no troubles as yet.

They are readily available and cost a whopping $14.95.

I suppose genuine VW oil filters are the best (and the most expensive $50+ each) but you need a special tool to unbolt and install them. On Type 4-engined kombis, the filter is mounted up and surrounded by engine parts so you can't get a normal filter wrench on it. You need the VW tool that has a crimped end to grab the filter, and a slot at the other for a screwdriver.

Otherwise, yes you can buy Ryco filters that have a hex bolt on the bottom, which makes it so much easier to undo and install them. Some people hate Ryco filters and wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. I've never had any problems though.

Most VW places will sell the MANN filters, supposedly better quality for around the price for the repco one. I have no problems removing mine with a strap type filter wrench, besides they only need to be just over hand tight.

Hi

If you value a your motor do not use a Ryco oil filter, they are crap (as told to me buy a Ryco employee), use genuine or German only, ie Knekt, Mann, Purolator. You have been warned!! Come on, how much extra does good German part cost, 10 buicks, cheap insurance.

As far as removing the oil filter buy one of these filter tools from KC tools "UNIVERSAL AUTOMOTIVE OIL FILTER WRENCH
Item: 08137
" Scroll down to see it http://www.kctools.com.au/newkcproam.htm

I contacted Mick Motors and they sell Mann oil filters for $14.95 (plus p & p). Sounds like a better option than Ryco at the same price.

yeah i use mann filters, have gone through about 5 or so of them and have never burst one or had any problems.

V-Force uses them, so does Jake Raby.
