Bench seat in kombi?
rice_girl - March 25th, 2005 at 07:42 PM

Can a bench front seat be fitted to a kombi? Anyone know of any specific make that fits?

karmen - March 25th, 2005 at 09:19 PM

someone on here was talking about that recently, Mandy

bring it up and we will sort it..

there is a centre seat (standard clip in ) maybe for slightly later models.

We can make one up but Mtransport Dept will need to approve for insurance reasons, Mandy

Why not fit a 2 + 1 set up out of a panel van kombi???

vwtyp2 - March 26th, 2005 at 08:33 AM

singlecabss and doublecabs had a 2+1 also.
couldn't be too hard to set up and get approved.

I'm not sure I know what you mean, is there a pic I could see of this 2+1 set up? Thanks

the early modle bay window kombi's had them (the low blinker ones) but they also had steel under the center so so could walk through the middle.

mabey you could purchase a front seat out of an early bay window and modify it to fit yours ? (these seats are also the 2+1 set up everyone is talking about)

$300 FOR THE WHOLE BUS

problem is i think the whole mounting area is completely different, as i have had my panel converted to 2 bucket seats at the front and alot of mounting has had to be fabricated.

I've got a bench seat in my kombi, that came out of a holden (shock horror) but it fits and it works well. I'm not entirely sure of the model or make of holden, just that it comes from a holden. (gee, I feel ashamed just saying i have a piece of holden in my car :( lol ) My kombi is a 1973 bay window btw.

Thanks everyone I'm going to look into doing it in the next few months.

Dodge: I was hoping an old holden/toyota/whatever bench seat out of a uterus would fit in. You had no trouble getting the engineer's certificate? Also, Is your kombi manual? Is it uncomfortable changing gears when someone is sitting in the middle?

I have a 73 bay window too :)

Sorry I don't have any pics handy, but VW type 2's had a number of options available for front seating, all versions were optional, so there's no fixed rule.
In general Kombi's and bus's had a "walk through" which means they have two front seats on pedistals with a walk through area between the seats. In most from '67-'79 there was an optional dicky seat which bolts in between the two front seats to make it 3 people up the front. These seats often come up at swap meets, and if you already have the walk through (I guess you do) then it will bolt straight in. As it's a factory option, they are not too hard to get complianced.
Also in general Single/double cab utes and panel vans had the "2+1" seats in the front. They were completely different under the seats and the spare sat under the two seater side. This option would be very involved to put into your bus as the whole mounting is different. I guess similar could be said for mounting a bench seat out of some other car.
As always I'd recommend going to some seating/engineering places and make sure what you have to do to get it approved BEFORE spending money and doing the mods. Best to be sure than sorry later.

As David said above, buy his van and it's already there for you!
