Distributor Drive Gear wrong? - Fixed Thanks
matara - March 27th, 2005 at 07:45 AM

I'm in Irealand and just bought a reconditioned AB 1300 twin port motor for my 68 beetle that I have over here at my parents.

I've installed it and the motor wont run unless I turn the dizzy 180 degrees. Then it runs but there is a lot of clatter like the valves are all very loose.

Is this something to do with the dizzy drive gear not being put in the right way round?

Is it possible to just rewire the the leads on the dizzy cap so that when the rotor is firing at cylinder 1 is at 10-30 rather than 4-30 on the clock?

I'm only here for a few more days so any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Steve

check your mechanical timing, ie. No. 1 at tdc when you put the distributor in?

If it runs 180 out then readjust the valves as they might have been set 180 out as well?? Just a thought..I would leave it where it works.

Same thing happened to mine, I had to remove the gear drive and turn it 180.
timed everything up and worked fine.
Gear drive is under the dizzy, take it out, I used a 10mm dowel which I had put a large nail in and I pushed the dowel into the hole in the drive, gave the nail a little tap to spread the dowel inside the hole and pulled it out.with the drive attached.
turn it 180 and re-fit.
Hey presto.

cheers

come across some thing like this before. using same dizzy after replacing motor found the leads were out of order, what was 1 was now 3. figured the cam gear was put on wrong.

Hi

Just punch the pin out of the drive dog and turn the dog 180 degrees. It will only make a slight difference if you leave the dizzy 180 because of the retard on #3.

Thanks guys I had adjusted the valves referencing the rotor position at its normal place. I re-adjusted the valves with no1 at the now 180 degree turned position and she's running smoothly.

Just for kicks I tried Dave's approach on my old knackered engine and I couldnt beleive it could get such a good grip. Didnt manage to get it out though. The drive seemed to be binding in the distributor hole.

I'm looking forward to taking it for a drive tomorrow, somewher e like Ashford Castle

No problems Steve as long as it works.
A mate of mine showed me how to do it as when I got my engine the drive was 180 out.
Worked first time and is a great trick.

Have a dark one for me
