this one has got me confused. I was told not to spray wd40 on the brushes area but it seem its the only way to get the bloody thing to charge. If I
spray a very small amount, the out put goes to 7 or 8 volts (this is a 6v genie) and the light will go away on the guage. Couple of days later it
starts playing up again (ie 1 or 2 volts output) and light stays on. Brushes are new. Apart from that, I don't know much about the genie because the
car has been sitting for years. Any ideas?

if the geni has been inactive for a long time, you may need to polarise it (never do this to an altenator!) to do this, hook it up to a battery and let it run like an electric motor for a bit. im not sure on how long you should let it run, or the wiring procedure for this... someone else should be able to help you out

Thats an odd one...
at least it is putting out 7-8V enough to charge a 6 volt battery...
I would just continue to lubricate the brushes with WD40...
Maybe the copper strips the brushes contact on the armature need cleaning, or are worn unevenly, and needs to be machined on a lathe...
this used to be a common overhaul thing back in the 50s & 60s when the brushes were renewed...
It seems that the WD40 is helping the brushes make contact with the thin copper strips around the armature....
so the problem seems to be there...
You could try cleaning the copper strips with some emery paper...
